pathbreaking study of social mobility

When Blau and Duncan's The American Occupational Structure was first published in 1967, long-time students of social mobility and social stratification felt that they had been rendered obsolete. This thick book is a difficult read by any standard, but introduction of unfamiliar statistical techniques, especially path analysis, made it impenetrable to scholars not on the methodological forefront of disciplines in which they had done creditable research for decades. Blau and Duncan made things worse by failing to explain that path analysis, which quickly became a methodological obsession in sociology, was just another effort to make regression analysis more informative. Today, good-quality introductory statistics texts provide enough instruction in path analysis to enable a neophyte to understand Blau and Duncan's model of individual mobility and, given a suitable data set, to replicate it with user-friendly software such as SPSS.

Brilliant though they were, I think Blau and Duncan made a serious theoretical error when they decided to treat structural mobility as a nuisance that merely blurred their focus on individual mobility. A good case can be made that level of educational attainment was the strongest predictor of offsprings' socioeconomic status primarily because the occupational distribution was opening at the top, with more and more good jobs being created to absorb the output of high schools, colleges, and universities. Education worked because there were occupational places to put educated people, not because we live in an intrinsically meritocratic world.

Today things have changed markedly. No one saw it coming, certainly not Blau and Duncan, but since the early 1970's the creation of good jobs -- prospects for upward mobility through investments in education -- has been undercut by out-sourcing, down-sizing, internationalization, and technological innovation. All this in pursuit of reduced labor costs. The efficacy of investment in education as an agency of upward social mobility has not stood the test of time.

Writing in the 1960's, however, Blau and Duncan saw the same happy future as everyone else: more good jobs, more opportunities for upward social mobility, unparalleled prosperity, and the professionalization of everyone. Near the end of their book they attributed their optimism to the ascendance of the norm of universalism. As with everyone else, they where caught unaware by dramatic structural changes.

I've read this book twice, and learned from it each time. The most important lesson, however, is one that Blau and Duncan missed: macro-level contextual factors inevitably take precedence over individual-level characteristics. Macro-level contextual factors, however, commonly defy inclusion in statistical models.

An Amazon Best Book of May 2016: I admit, when I hit a saggy part in a story, I do skip ahead to see if the plot will pick up again. At no point in Joe Hill’s doorstop-weight novel did I have that urge, for each and every page had me entranced. Set in New Hampshire right about now, The Fireman opens with a man spontaneously combusting outside the office of school nurse Harper Grayson. He’s not the first victim of Draco incendia trychophyton, the spore responsible for this transformation, but he’s the signal that Dragonscale has spread to Harper’s small town. It also spreads to Harper soon after she realizes she’s pregnant. Highly contagious and 100 percent fatal, Dragonscale soon plunges the world into chaos. (An oddly affective moment is when Harper logs onto Google and finds, instead of the search engine, the words “Goodby.”) But Hill smartly focuses on Harper and her attempts at survival, keeping the stakes small but extremely personal as the uninfected hunt down and murder the infected, supposedly to protect the rest of the town but really to indulge in sociopathic tendencies now unleashed. The Fireman starts with a hot burn, simmers as Harper joins a group of infected hiding in a summer camp, and then heats up again as the near-utopian community ruptures. Hill weaves questions about the power of leadership, group-think, love, catastrophe, and family into the plot. His smartest move is to give no clear-cut answers to these questions, making The Fireman more substantial and real than a typical apocalyptic thriller. Nurse Harper Grayson is in her element trying to help the afflicted at the local hospital, but when she becomes infected around the same time she discovers she is pregnant, her husband goes insane and tries to kill her. Harper escapes and finds refuge with other infected people at a rural camp. With the help of The Fireman (a mysterious man who can shoot fire from his fingertips) and others, Harper discovers the cause of Dragonscale and how to control it. While this entry is not as scary as Hill's Horns or Heart-Shaped Box, the horror of mob mentality will remind teens of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," William Golding's The Lord of the Flies, and the author's father Stephen King's The Stand. With likable characters, glib dialogue, suspense, and inevitable doom, the book feels like a popular television series script, and teens will appreciate the pop culture references—Harry Potter, Narnia, The Walking Dead, Mary Poppins, and more. Flashes of Brilliance Amid a Curiously Slow and Predictable Plot

The Fireman squanders a great premise (a spontaneous combustion plague) with some curious pacing issues. The first act is wonderful as author Joe Hill (son of Stephen King) explores society's downfall with some ingenious pop culture references (Glenn Beck AND J.K. Rowling bite the dust in this one). However, once our protagonist - a pregnant nurse infected with the dragonscale - finds safe haven in a cult-like camp of other infected individuals, the plot grinds to a halt.

At 750 pages, The Fireman is a big book. Unfortunately, about 400 of those pages are spent slowly revealing that the camp is not as safe as it seems (something fairly obvious to the reader the moment our protagonist is welcomed into "The Bright.")

There are some interesting ideas and scenes here - for example, the "Cremation Crews" made up of uninfected men are scouring the blasted landscape looking to exterminate anyone infected with dragonscale, a deliciously tense ambulance heist sequence, and a wickedly dark reveal at the end of the novel - but unfortunately, just not enough seems to happen to justify this novel's length (a criticism ironically often lobbed at King's work). And the characters don't seem to grow and evolve as much as have backstory monologues at the appropriate times in the narrative.

Joe Hill is an awesome writer (his novel NOS4A2 is a seriously great and inventive horror novel), but The Fireman commits the cardinal sin of apocalyptic plague novels - it gets boring.

Not Joe Hill's best!

I have enjoyed Joe Hill's work to date but this novel really didn't impress me (it looks like I'm in the minority though).

I don't like reviews that give too much of the book away, so I'll try to keep it brief.

It has an interesting idea at its core but I really felt it was poorly executed:
- the book could have been much shorter.. it could have been a far better read if it had been tightened up;
- some of the dialogue was cringe-worthy.. people just don't speak like that;
- the characters were very one dimensional;
- there were a number of occasions where the continuity didn't hold and the author had to backtrack to cover off something that had not been established earlier.

Hill said the book was written over 4 years and I think this shows. The style, to, me seems to change from time to time and the way the characters talk to each other seems to chop and change.

All in all I'd say it felt like a bit of a mess.

I was very disappointed in this book

Wow ... such high hopes. I was very disappointed in this book. The premise sounded promising - a virus that cause people to burst into flames - and the opening chapter was riveting. But after that Hill's story progresses at a snail's pace. I was most disappointed because I'd enjoyed all of his other novels immensely. It's unfair to add that he's Stephen King's son, but that being the case is partly why my expectations were so high (though I've had something of a love/hate relationship with his offerings over the past few years).
Honestly, the worst thing I can say about this book is that it was boring, and in the end, I didn't really care who lived or died. I had no emotional attachment to any of the characters. I can't help but feel like this book could have benefited mightily from a better editor who could trim it down from 600-plus pages to 300.

A bold memoir of oppression and defiance

"Before Night Falls," the autobiography of Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas, is an astonishing book. Arenas notes that he dictated part of the book into a tape recorder, and it was later transcribed by a friend. This format probably accounts for the book's intimate tone; I could imagine Arenas sitting in front of me and telling the whole story over coffee. The book has been translated into a forthright English by Dolores M. Koch.
"Before Night Falls" begins with Arenas' childhood in rural Cuba. It details his life as a writer, his many sexual exploits as a gay man, and his sufferings under the regime of Fidel Castro. It is amazing to read how Arenas had to struggle to exist as a writer in a police state; he tells how he was forced to hide manuscripts and how friends smuggled his writings out of Cuba for publication in foreign countries.
The book contains many shocking and painful episodes, such as his accounts of his own imprisonment and exile. But his life story also contains moments of humor and hope. Particularly interesting are Arenas' accounts of his friendships with other gay Cuban writers, such as Virgilio Pinera and Jose Lezama Lima. Overall, the tone of the book reflects Arenas' many moods: sensuous, angry, joyful, outraged, wry, melancholy, and--above all--defiant. His writing is rich in colorful personalities and fascinating anecdotes.
An interesting companion volume to Arenas' autobiography would be the book "Eminent Maricones: Arenas, Lorca, Puig, and Me," by gay Colombian-born writer Jaime Manrique. Manrique knew Arenas personally, and "Eminent Maricones" contains an account of Arenas' last days as he worked to complete "Before Night Falls" while dying of AIDS-related complications. Having read that book made me appreciate Arenas' achievement even more.
At one point Arenas recalls advice given to him by Jose Lezama Lima: "Remember that our only salvation lies in words: write!" Reading this book, I get the sense that Arenas achieved his own personal "salvation" through his literature, and in particular, through this autobiography. "Before Night Falls" is an amazing human testament that moved me deeply. If you are interested in Latin American literature, gay studies, the art of autobiography, or human rights issues, I strongly recommend this book to you.

It is most reassuring to see that a film based on Arenas' extraordinary book "Before Night Falls" is gaining the kudos and exposure this underrated (in this country at least)author deserves. I first read this book when it was translated and released in 1993 and seeing the film only made me hasten to return to the original book. Time has aged the eloquence of this memoir but has not marred the impact of the brilliance of the writing. Arenas wrote with a degree of truth and keen observation that makes his moments of antics with his characters like comic relief in a Shakespearean play. For obvious reasons the film (brilliantly directed by Julian Schnabel and acted by Javier Bardem as Arenas) could not dwell on some of the elements that make the book so unique: the extended description of life in Cuban prisons is only touched on. But the single most significant rediscovery in reading "Before Night Falls" again is Arenas' poetry. He had a gift of distilling Magical Realism, transforming even the radical ugliness of Castro's Cuba into the topical paradise so beloved by Cubans everywhere. See the film, but let that experience introduce you to the rich literary output of one of the most exciting writers of the last century.

Different than, but equally as good as, the film

Reinaldo Arenas, Before Night Falls (Penguin, 1993)

Arenas' memoir of life in Cuba has recently been made into one of the finest films extant by Julian Schnabel. Schnabel did an excellent job with the book; while his interpretation of the text was loose in places, he managed to capture in images the style of Arenas' writing.

In other words, if you saw the movie before reading the book, you're going to be somewhat surprised. Some of Schnabel's more memorable scenes are mentioned in passing (if at all) in the book, and one of the film's central sequences, the balloon escape, gets one sentence. Where Arenas and Schnabel intersect is in the lushness, the ability to find celebration and remarkable beauty inside the ugliness of the Castro regime (and, for a few years' worth, the Batista regime before it).

Arenas' memoir is also likely to shock more than a few in its sexual explicitness (another aspect Schnabel rather shied away from, which I found a tad surprising while reading the book), but so be it. There is nothing gratuitous about either Arenas' promiscuity or his literary descriptions of it; it's no different than using the language of excess to describe the beastliness of a life that involves hand-to-mouth poverty and political censure. And throughout, more than anything (and perhaps this is what makes the book so powerful), Before Night Falls is a celebration, both of Arenas' life and the lives of many other Cuban writers persecuted as dissidents in the latter half of the twentieth century. **** 1/2

The legal world can be a daunting place especially to someone not versed in legalese. The books by Tad Crawford distill this information into a very accessible text that helps explain all the important legal issues artists should be aware of. Everything you need to know for contracts, copyright, taxes, etc. is covered here. The book does a great job explaining what your rights are, which is especially important in this digital age where artistic theft is easy and rampant. The law is always changing, too, so it's great that they keep updating these books. One nice thing is the book has templates for standard contracts and invoices and such. Highly recommended.

"Business and Legal Forms for Illustrators" is an excellent source of artist agreement forms it even comes with a CD so you can easily print out the forms that you need when you need them. I had a pending art sale that required a different legal form from what I had previously been familiar with this book offers superb samples that can be used by an artist. Easy to understand written in plain English. This book is a wise investment that could save any artist a bunch of headaches and misunderstandings. I highly recommend this book.
