The Invisible Gorilla: How Our Intuitions Deceive Us, by Christopher Chabris, Daniel Simons

Reading this book will make you less sure of yourself—and that’s a good thing. In The Invisible Gorilla, Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons, creators of one of psychology’s most famous experiments, use remarkable stories and counterintuitive scientific findings to demonstrate an important truth: Our minds don’t work the way we think they do. We think we see ourselves and the world as they really are, but we’re actually missing a whole lot.

Chabris and Simons combine the work of other researchers with their own findings on attention, perception, memory, and reasoning to reveal how faulty intuitions often get us into trouble. In the process, they explain:

• Why a company would spend billions to launch a product that its own analysts know will fail
• How a police officer could run right past a brutal assault without seeing it
• Why award-winning movies are full of editing mistakes
• What criminals have in common with chess masters
• Why measles and other childhood diseases are making a comeback
• Why money managers could learn a lot from weather forecasters

Again and again, we think we experience and understand the world as it is, but our thoughts are beset by everyday illusions. We write traffic laws and build criminal cases on the assumption that people will notice when something unusual happens right in front of them. We’re sure we know where we were on 9/11, falsely believing that vivid memories are seared into our minds with perfect fidelity. And as a society, we spend billions on devices to train our brains because we’re continually tempted by the lure of quick fixes and effortless self-improvement.

The Invisible Gorilla reveals the myriad ways that our intuitions can deceive us, but it’s much more than a catalog of human failings. Chabris and Simons explain why we succumb to these everyday illusions and what we can do to inoculate ourselves against their effects. Ultimately, the book provides a kind of x-ray vision into our own minds, making it possible to pierce the veil of illusions that clouds our thoughts and to think clearly for perhaps the first time.

Tom Vanderbilt Reviews The Invisible Gorilla

Tom Vanderbilt writes on design, technology, architecture, science, and many other topics. He is author of Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us) published in 2008 by Alfred A. Knopf, and Survival City: Adventures Among the Ruins of Atomic America, published in 2002 by Princeton Architectural Press. He is contributing editor to I.D. and Print magazines, contributing writer at Design Observer, and writes for many publications, ranging from Wired to the New York Times to Men's Vogue to the Wilson Quarterly. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Do you remember when you first saw--or more likely, didn’t see--the gorilla? For me it was one afternoon a number of years ago when I clicked open one of those noxious-but-irresistible forwarded emails ("You Won’t Believe Your Eyes!"). The task was simple--count the number of passes in a tight cluster of basketball players--but the ensuing result was astonishing: As I dutifully (and correctly) tracked the number of passes made, a guy in a gorilla suit had strolled into the center, beat his chest, and sauntered off. But I never saw the gorilla. And I was hardly alone.

The video, which went on to become a global viral sensation, brought "inattentional blindness"--a once comparatively obscure interest of cognitive psychologists--into striking relief. Here was a dramatic reminder that looking is not necessarily seeing, that “paying” attention to one thing might come at the cost of missing another altogether. No one was more taken with the experience than the authors of the original study, Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris, as they recount in their new--and, dare I say, eye-opening--book, The Invisible Gorilla. "The fact that people miss things is important," they write, "but what impressed us even more was the surprise people showed when they realized what they had missed."

The Invisible Gorilla uses that ersatz primate as a departure point (and overarching metaphor) for exploring the myriad of other illusions, perceptual or otherwise, that we encounter in everyday life--and our often complete lack of awareness as we do so. These "gorillas" are lurking everywhere--from the (often false) memories we think we have to the futures we think we can anticipate to the cause-and-effect chains we feel must exist. Writing with authority, clarity, and a healthy dose of skepticism, Simons and Chabris explore why these illusions persist--and, indeed, seem to multiply in the modern world--and how we might work to avoid them. Alas, there are no easy solutions--doing crosswords to stave off cognitive decline in one’s dotage may simply make you better at doing crosswords. But looking for those "gorillas in our midst" is as rewarding as actually finding them.

From Publishers Weekly
Professors of Psychology Chabris and Simons write about six everyday illusions of perception and thought, including the beliefs that: we pay attention more than we do, our memories are more detailed than they are, confident people are competent people, we know more than we actually do, and our brains have reserves of power that are easy to unlock. Through a host of studies, anecdotes, and logic, the authors debunk conventional wisdom about the workings of the mind and what "experts" really know (or don't). Presented almost as a response to Malcolm Gladwell's blink, the books pay special attention to "the illusion of knowledge" and the danger of basing decision-making, in areas such as investing, on short-term information; in the authors' view, careful analysis of assumed truths is preferred over quick, intuitive thinking. Chabris and Simons are not against intuition, "...but we don't think it should be exalted above analysis without good evidence that it is truly superior."

From Booklist
Since psychologists Chabris and Simons first teamed up in the late 1990s for a study on perception, the so-called invisible-gorilla video buttressing their experiment has become world famous. In the clip, two teams pass a basketball around while a gorilla-suited woman briefly appears and pounds her chest before walking away. When viewers are instructed to count only the basketball passes, 50 percent completely miss seeing the gorilla. Even more surprising, however, is most people's insistence that they could never miss something so glaringly obvious. This overconfidence in perceptual accuracy serves as the springboard for Chabris and Simons' engaging treatise on how our intuitions often lead us astray. In chapters with titles like “I Think I Would Have Seen That” and “Jumping to Conclusions,” they methodically deconstruct what they refer to as our “everyday illusions.” Other forms of self-deception include faulty memories and misconstruing cause and effect, both illustrated with eye-opening, often humorous examples. Chabris and Simons gratifyingly supplement such ego-deflating illustrations with ways to better use the mind and ultimately protect ourselves from wrongdoers. --Carl Hays

Great Book
By Alan Dale Daniel
The Invisible Gorilla is an unusual name for an unusual book. The authors Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons have assembled a evidence of six illusions that impact our lives in significant ways. Chapter One deals with the illusion of attention, that is, the illusion that we see or observe far more than we think. Several experiments have proven that even obvious things are easily missed by people. Up to fifty percent of testers failed to see a fake gorilla enter a basketball game where the testers were counting the number of ball passes rather than looking for gorillas. It is from this experiment that the book gets its name.

Most think that such a gorilla would be easily noticed; however, various experiments have shown this is not the case. This lack of ability to see objects that are not expected may explain why cars pull out in front of motorcycles, as it is theorized that people driving cars do not expect to see motorcycles and thus they do not. Cell phone users also miss obvious objects while they are driving. It seems cell phone users that are driving suffer from a reduction in awareness, but they are not aware of it. Thus the illusion that they are as fully aware while talking on the phone as they are when the phone is not in use. The Invisible Gorilla points out how this attention illusion can have real and sometimes harsh results in the real world.

Then the book goes on to describe five other illusions: the illusion of memory, the illusion of knowledge and confidence, the illusion that in a series of events, event one causes event two, and the illusion that certain mythical processes - such as hypnotism - can help one reach their full potential. Another illusion is we can do many things well all at once (multi-tasking); however, experiments have shown this is a false assumption.

The book's key message is that we think our mental abilities and capacities are greater than they really are. Perhaps the largest impact is in court, where witnesses think they can accurately remember an event that occurred some time ago.

I loved this book. It explains so many problems faced in a modern world where information as well as objects are hurled into our lives at breathtaking speed. What is most important is that we stop assuming our minds can process all this whirl without problems. More experiments are necessary to evaluate how our minds work. Understanding our limitations is important to achieving our full potential.

There is How We Think We Are and Then There is How We Are!
By Kevin Currie-Knight
Lately, there has been a plethora of books trying to popularize the more interesting and counter-intuitive results from fields like behavioral psychology. All of those books, as far as I'm aware, mention a particularly famous study where participants are asked to view a video of basketball players and asked to count the number of passes. As odd as it sounds, about half of the participants fail to notice the "invisible gorilla" - a man dressed like a gorilla strolling from one side of the court to the other.

These two authors are the inventors of that and subsequent experiments. In other words, these authors are very knowledgeable about their field because, in a sense, they invented one of its primary experiments.

What is their focus in this book? Well, it is not so much that people didn't notice the "invisible gorilla" that surprised them, but the adamance with which participants denied that they could have missed something so obvious. Many disbelieved that there was actually a gorilla in the tape they were shown, accusing he researchers of playing a trick on them. So, the authors' mission in this book is to explore the human tendency toward overconfidence in their abilities.

Each chapter focuses on a different "illusion" that comes from the human tendency to (very subconsciously) overestimate our ability. They are as follows:

Chapter 1 - Illusion of Attention, or, the belief that we are attentive to much more than we actually are at any given moment.
Chapter 2 - Illusion of Memory, or, the illusion that our memories are much more exact than they are.
Chapter 3 - Illusion of Confidence, or, the illusion that confidence (in others) is a good sign of competence.
Chapter 4 - Illusion of Knowledge, or, the illusion that we have detailed knowledge about many things that, in fact, we only have vague knowledge of.
Chapter 5 - Illusion of Cause, or, the illusion that two things happening sequentially necessarily signifies scause/effect relationship.
Chapter 6 - Illusion of Potential, or, the illusion that in every human, there is a vast array of untapped potential waiting to come out (if only we learn to use more of our brains, listen to Mozart, "train our brains" etc.)

The thing is that while this book is a very interesting and well-written one for casual reading, each of these illusions has very potentially serious consequences. While the authors present studies and anecdotes in each chapter that illustrate each phenomenon, the message is very serious: if we are not careful to be somewhat aware of our tendency to overestimate our abilities, we could send the wrong person to prison (if we are a witness), spend too much time and money on the wrong things for our child's cognitive development (if we are a parent), or even cause an accident (if we are a texter-while-driving).

For instance, the authors spend a great deal of time in chapter 1 debunking the myth that is multitasking. In reality, study after study show that we can only multi task when (a) all but one of the things we are doing is completely routine, or (b) alternate our attention rapidly, but often ineffectively, between all the things we are doing. It is literally impossible to do two non-routine things well at the same time. And this leads to people thinking that they can text or talk on their cell while driving, when studies show that this leads to the exact same type of delayed reactions exhibited by drunk drivers. Once we text or talk, we can only drive well when nothing unexpected happens. Should a car dart in front of us, our reaction time will be about the same as the drunk driver.

Another example? Chapter 5 spends much time examining the disjunct between how scientific studies work to establish causal connections, and how the human brain does it. The latter often falls victim to seeing causal relationships in events that are simply sequential or correlational. Particularly, the media often tends to report a causal link between x and y when the scientific study only said that factors x and y were correlated (and the cause may be z or something more complex). We also tend, in our personal lives, to give more credence to anecdotes than statistics. Put these together, and it leads to a lot of wasted money and time chasing false leads (like trying to undo autism by not getting children vaccinated, or buying Baby Mozart CD's based on very flawed reports).

All in all, this book is not only interesting and entertaining to read, but has some very serious lessons to teach. One would think a book telling us that we are not often all that we think we are might imbue pessimism into its readers. This book really does the opposite: it shows us that by knowing where we are most likely to make mistakes in estimating our abilities, we actually INCREASE our competence (or, am I just succumbing to the illusion of confidence?).

Fascinating analysis of how our brains fool us
By jhl
No matter how carefully you think about what you're doing, no matter how realistic your view of the world seems to be, you're apparently fooling yourself. According to psychologists Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons, our brains are hardwired to edit our perceptions and memories, to misinterpret evidence and jump to conclusions. They outline a variety of illusions the human mind falls prey to, some of which make intuitive (uh-oh - the goal of the book is to prove the unreliability of intuition) sense, including the fact that our brains edit information coming from our senses (we can all understand that if we noticed everything happening around us we could pay attention to none of it) and overconfidence (surprise! People who don't know very much about a subject overestimate how much they understand - I have some colleagues I'd like to hand that chapter to). Others were more startling - that in general people tend to believe the first "evidence" of a fact they receive, especially when it's presented emotionally, and they resist later evidence to the contrary, no matter how convincing (so it's not just those idiots from the other end of the political spectrum who do that!).

The Invisible Gorilla presents a lot of illuminating information that is well worth reading - it's both interesting and enlightening. I guess popular psychology books are expected to propose a solution to the problems they outline, so the final chapter offers somewhat less compelling suggestions for avoiding your brain's false intuitions. While on the one hand I was glad to discover that I'm a normal human, not an inattentive dummy (which is what I feel like when I'm driving, and I don't even own a cell phone!), on the other I was sorry to learn that there's not a whole lot of hope for change, barring a life of hyper-vigilance.

“That’s an interesting way to solve the problem, Tony.”

Miss Tobin is talking about a math problem on the blackboard, but Tony is thinking about real problems.

If his parents or his friend Joel or Joel’s sixteen-year-old sister Lisa knew what Tony was thinking about a lot of the time, they’d probably freak out. About snitching on Joel, who Tony knows is a shoplifter. About watching Lisa undress each night and liking what he sees. About money and the changes money makes in people (especially his mother).

Hung up at thirteen. That’s Tony Miglione—especially this morning in math class in front of Miss Tobin, for everyone to see...

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-10 When his hardworking inventor father strikes it rich and moves the family from working class Jersey City to wealthy Rosemont, Tony Miglione finds that everything from friendships to school takes on a new and confusing twist. Suddenly his mother is intent on climbing the social ladder; his grandmother isn't allowed to cook for the family anymore since they've hired a housekeeper; and his older brother, Ralph, who's always wanted to be a teacher has suddenly decided to go into business. With a voice that calls to mind that awkward phase between being just a kid and the advent of puberty, actor Justin Long captures the discomfort and frustration of Tony's struggle to fit in with his new environment as well as his growing distrust and dislike of the "perfect" boy next door whose charming demeanor masks his compulsion to shoplift. Listening to this tape of the 1971 novel by Judy Blume is like listening in on exchange of stories in a "boys only" clubhouse - eye opening, funny, and poignant all at the same time.

Review
"Tony Miglione is perfectly happy in Jersey City, and looking forward to going to junior high with his friends, so he is not at all pleased when he learns his father's invention has made the family rich....With a new school and burgeoning sexual yearnings to cope with, Tony is a troubled boy. Judy Blume does a fine job of seeing all this from a boy's viewpoint."--Saturday Review.

From the Publisher
Ever since his dad got rich from an invention and his family moved to a wealthy neighborhood on Long Island, Tony Miglione's life has been turned upside down. For starters, there's his new friend Joel, who shoplifts. Then there's Joel's sixteen-year-old sister, Lisa, who gets undressed every night without pulling down her shades. And there's Grandma, who won't come down from her bedroom. On top of all his other worries, there are all the questions Tony has about growing up....

Why couldn't things have stayed the same?

Great for a young teenager - boys or girls!!
By Seanzilla
I received this book years ago when I was around 13-14 from my Grandfather. Although I wasn't an avid reader (at the time), I remember enjoying this book immensely. I picked up a copy for my 13-year-old stepson for general reading over the Summer. Like me, he enjoyed it a great deal as well.

The story is set in the early 60s-70s, and is about a boy named Tony Miglione as he is coming "into his own" in the process of evolving into a young man. After moving from his home in New Jersey, thanks to his father's business success, they move into an upper-class neighborhood in Rosemont, New York. Soon, he meets Joel (a well-to-do local hoodlum) and his older sister, Lisa. Almost instantly, Tony becomes infatuated with Lisa; often attempting to spy on her as she undresses in the window next door. This infatuation with Lisa leads Tony to begin to discover aspects of his own sexual development and desires. Tony also meets a girl named "Corky" who begins to like him very much, but Tony is only interested in the prospect of developing a relationship with Lisa. Joel creates family issues for Tony due to some mischievous behaviors, and eventually their friendship draws to an end. Once Tony realizes that Lisa has a new boyfriend, the youthful struggle of his prospects of love become shattered, leaving Tony to deal with his romantic wounds.

There are some suggestions of sexuality through the book, but not in an inappropriate way. I believe it is a great book for boys (and girls) who are coming into the age of puberty, the prospects of attraction, as well as interpersonal relationships. It also makes a good segue for discussion of your child's physical and emotional changes that occur at the beginning of maturity.

Sweet and Unremarkable
By William Arsenis
My wife is a novelist and she recommended THEN AGAIN, MAYBE I WON’T. She said was a really good YA romance novel. As I was reading the book, the title of my wife’s latest blog, “Where’s the Romance?” came to mind.

So while I was looking for period romance, or romance period, I eventually realized THEN AGAIN, MAYBE I WON’T is actually a coming of age story.

I know, I know; I could have taken the time to read the blurb and I didn’t. Shoot me, God knows my wife will.

So in fairness to Judy Blume, THEN AGAIN, MAYBE I WON’T is a pretty good novel about a pubescent boy growing up in New York in the seventies.

I was impressed with how well the author, an adult woman, so convincingly got into the mind of a young teenage boy.

This novel is a bit on the slow side by today’s standards, but considering it was authored decades ago, I wouldn’t be so quick to judge on that account
.
While it makes for an endearing read, I didn’t really feel there was much of a point to the novel. I don’t even recall the ending—it was that forgettable.

THEN AGAIN, MAYBE I WON’T reads like an uninspired memoir. When I finished the book I was thinking: nice, but so what?

A Classic Tale for Multiple Generations
By K. Groh
Like many reviewers, I read this book as a 10 year-old. It was the "male" companion to Judy Blume's
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.. I remember the impact it had on me as an adolescent (and the discussion I had with my father after I read it - talk about embarrassing!).

I purchased it for my son. I don't think he's read it yet but I reread it before giving it to him - just to make sure I remembered what was in it so I could field questions if they came up.

It was a great book then and it's still a great book.

It is a very easy going way of letting young people (girls too) understand some of puberty's mysteries without going into a lecture. It give young boys a chance to feel like they are not alone in their struggles and changes.

Highly recommended for boys and girls ready to learn a little more about puberty. Not recommended for anyone under age 9 or so.

Review
“It is one of the best books out there, so have continued to use it. Students generally like it. . . .This is the state of the art text.” (W. Douglas Evans)

“The strength of the book is in the examples (including boxes), especially the different lengths so that you can kind of choose yourself how much to use and how deep to go into a particular illustration.” (G. Scott Erickson)

“I like the mix of topics in the book, and I like the chapter dedicated to each step of the marketing process.” (Jennifer Cross)

“I like the text because it ties to concepts the students have learning in Principles of Marketing, but also distinguishes how social marketing is different than traditional marketing. The vignettes provide good examples, and the chapters are not too long or complex.” (Nicole Vowles)

an excellent survey of Qing dynasty politics
By razetheladder
This is an excellent introduction to politics and structural change during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). In accessible and engaging prose, Wakeman concentrates on how power was organized and what led the most prosperous and perhaps most powerful country in the world to collapse into rebellion and foreign domination before finally breaking apart under warlord rule.
Wakeman begins with a useful survey of the class structure of imperial Chinese society: peasants, gentry, merchants, and state. He then briefly describes the rise of the Manchus, their inauguration of the Qing dynasty, and the increasing power of the state under the early emperors. Wakeman devotes the second half of the book to Western imperialism, internal rebellion, and the ultimately futile efforts made by the central government to maintain its control. Woven into this narrative is a description of how the changing institutional basis of the state eventually gave rise to independent local centers of political and military power, dooming the Qing dynasty.
If you are looking for a quick, coherent, and well-written survey of Qing politics, this is your book. What the book does not cover is social or (for the most part) economic history. The lives of women and the poor are almost totally absent, and the momentous changes in traditional Chinese culture are rarely explored. While this leaves important gaps in the narrative, Wakeman's approach is far preferable to those textbook writers who seek to include everything but succeed only in sucking the life from their subject. Yet neither does Wakeman stray too far into the realm of personalities: he is able to keep his material lively even while laying out an argument based primarily on structural explanations. This is a service to both the reader and the history.

Imperial China in it's most defining hour
By Daniel Stroup
This book can be divided into two broad sections. In order to develop a background for his discussion of the Qing dynasty and reasons contributing to its demise, Wakeman, in the first section sketches the major social players of the time: the peasantry, the gentry, and the merchants.
The second section, which takes up a majority of the book is concerned with an outline history of the Qing dynasty - from the rise in Manchu power, their conquering of China, their subsequent rule and their ultimate fall.
Although the book is brief, only 256 pages (including notes), it is refreshing in its lucid explinations on why the Qing dynasty fell. It places the blame on a combination of internal and external conditions that had been reshaping Chinese society throughout the late 1700's and 1800's.
However, most of the book's emphasis is placed on the last sixty years of the dynasty (1850-1910). The bulk of the argument considers the Taiping rebellion(1850-1864) as being the catalyst that set in motion a series of events such as attempts at military, political, economic, and educational reforms, along with the growth in the local gentry. Wakeman considers this growth in gentry power vis-a-vis the central authorities the raison d'e^tre that brought down the Qing dynasty and altered the fundamental traditional relationships within Chinese society.

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews The Fall of Imp. China
By A Customer
Frederic Wakeman Jr.'s book, "The Fall of Imperial China" is the first of a series of of books on China which were published in 1974. This series has served as a standard survey text in a number of college undergraduate and graduate level classes on China.
"The Fall of Imperial China" will provide some sketchy background on China before the Ch'ing (Manchu) Dynasty (1644-1911), but will deal mainly with with decline of China under the Ch'ing Dynasty. The book carries the story of Chinese history right up to the 1911 Chinese Revolution.
Although "The Fall of Imperial China" is a scholarly book, Wakefield's writing style is such that even a person without much education in Chinese history can pick up this book and read it with ease. This is an enjoyable book to have in a personal library because it is so well indexed.

Review
"The textbook serves my course very well. It focuses more on applied project management instead of IT projects."

"I've been using Kloppenborg since it first came out (having met [the author] at a conference while I was planning my course for the first time). I really like the book, which is why I have continued using it. I like that it is succinct, laid out intelligently, and includes good examples. . . . I even appreciate the typeface and page organization--it is much easier on the eyes than other texts which are much too densely packed. . . . As project management textbooks go, Kloppenborg's is very student friendly. I also like how it is so tightly connected to the PMBOK and to MS Project. . . ."

Textbook Does NOT Include Microsoft Project Printed Access Card!!
By Brian Green
The product name is incorrect. It does not include an access card for Microsoft Project. I notified Amazon when the first copy did not include the card, and they promptly sent another textbook. The second also did not have the card. I would give Amazon a third chance except my class has already started. I am returning the second textbook as well because without the access card the new textbook is not worth the extra cost. The publisher (Cengage) does not offer the textbook without the access card, so Amazon should return these books as defective.

Mind-Numbing Reiteration of PMI Ideas
By M. Clement
This book is a mind-numbing reiteration of the Project Management Institute's principles and ideas. Contemporary Project Management appears to assume that everyone has heard of PMI and specifically wants the PMI spin on project management. It follows the PMI ideas so slavishly that one might as well just buy materials from PMI.

The Hunt for Bin Laden: Task Force Dagger, by Robin Moore

“As the [al-Qaida terrorists] charged one wall, three Green Berets leaned over the parapets, oblivious to the enemy small-arms fire that was cracking by their heads and shoulders.

“ ‘Focus, squeeze, focus, squeeze,’ they recited quietly. . . . Each time . . . the lifeless body [of an al-Qaida terrorist] would snap back through the desert air and drop onto the sandy courtyard.”

The war in Afghanistan was the most secret conflict since the CIA’s covert war in Laos; thousands of journalists covered it, yet, ironically, little is known about how it was waged or what really happened—until now.

The Hunt for bin Laden plunges the reader into America’s War on Terror, from the first top-secret meetings of TASK FORCE DAGGER in Tampa on the afternoon of September 11, 2001, through the liberation of Kabul sixty-two days later and the tragedies of OPERATION ANACONDA. The book takes the reader into the heat of battle—as seen through the eyes of the Green Berets on the ground. This is the story of how only a few hundred men, operating from a secret Special Forces base, changed the course of history in Central Asia and destroyed a hundred-thousand-man terrorist army in less than ninety days.

Action-packed and controversial, The Hunt for bin Laden is teeming with revelations and inside information: the truth about John Walker Lindh and Mike Spann; the failure of the “conventional” generals; the courage of the Northern Alliance; the wounding and murder of journalists; and the flaws and frustrations of the hunt for bin Laden himself.

In mid-December 2001, Robin Moore arrived in Afghanistan, where he joined his old friends, whom he had celebrated thirty-five years earlier in his book The Green Berets and who were now calling in airstrikes and fighting alongside the armies of the Northern Alliance against the terrorist al-Qaida and Taliban. In less than three winter months, about a hundred Green Berets accounted for the deaths of perhaps as many as forty thousand terrorists and the winning of a war in Afghanistan—where the Soviets had found fighting a war all but impossible.

Amazon.com Review
The first wave of U.S. Army Special Forces arrived in Afghanistan in mid-October, 2001; a few months later, they had routed the Taliban and taken control of the country. In fact, writes Robin Moore, "fewer than 100 American soldiers were on the ground when Kabul fell." The Hunt for Bin Laden is both a celebration of the Special Forces, "the most fearsome fighting unit the world has ever known," and a detailed account of how just a few hundred Green Berets, working alongside the Northern Alliance, were able to overcome nearly 100,000 entrenched al-Qaida and Taliban members and take control of Afghanistan in such a short time. Though Special Forces had participated in all of the small conflicts since World War II, the war in Afghanistan was the first time they were in charge of an entire operation. For these gung-ho soldiers, it was the moment they had been waiting for.

From the beginning, the operation was a blend of cutting-edge and 19th-century weaponry. The Northern Alliance soldiers, though brave and determined, were often outfitted with only rusted rifles and worn-out boots. In one particularly fascinating scene, Moore writes of the Northern Alliance cavalry leading a charge on horseback while American fighter jets roared overhead dropping laser-guided missiles with pinpoint accuracy on Taliban forces. The author of the military classic The Green Berets, Moore knows his subject intimately and his access to the troops on the ground is impressive. This makes the book incredibly detailed, but unquestionably subjective, so those interested in a political overview or an objective look at the policy behind the operation should look elsewhere. This is strictly a heroic portrayal of a military victory and the difficult search for Osama bin Laden, and at times Moore's writing sounds like copy out of Soldier of Fortune magazine. This bombast may not appeal to all readers, but his deep knowledge of Special Forces and his inside information makes this book a must read for those interested not only in this particular conflict but in how guerilla and unconventional warfare is executed. --Shawn Carkonen

“Fast-paced and immensely entertaining.”
–The Washington Post Book World

“BLACK HAWK DOWN–IN THE SNOW . . . Little is held back in the sweeping reality of the text. It is all there: the pain, the suffering, the fear, the courage, the sardonic morgue humor of war, the strength somehow found in its jaws–
and the honor in fighting the good fight.”

“[This book] transports you inside the beating heart of America’s war on terror, then spirals you down a main artery onto the front lines with a special Forces detachment cutting down al Qaeda terrorists. . . . Take it off the non-fiction shelf; make it a drink coaster
By Al
The members of the SFOD-A that I served with during my first tour in Afghanistan and I are absolutely amazed this passed any factual quality control check. It reads as if it were written at a corner table in the Green Beret Club at Ft. Bragg by people who weren't there, interspersed with details by someone who heard something from someone else who said he was there. The account of Tora Bora was absolutely laughable; the pictures and the tale that was told was akin to having someone who landed on Normandy Beach on 6 JULY 1944 (a month later) give his account of an assault he did not participate in. Critical parts of Operation Anaconda were omitted. Contrary to the content of this work, those who wear a green beret are not instantly contemptous of those who do not; those are our roots where we first learned to soldier. The book's incessant recounting of petty inter-service and rank-conscious jealousies distort the reality of the sheer effort involved by all of those involved in prosecuting the fight in the early days of the war. The theme of "swaggering barrel-chested freedom fighters fight valiantly yet alone to overcome the juggernaut military bureaucracy" is so far off the mark as to make this whole story read like a comic book. He tries and fails time and again to draw logical comparisons between the Special Forces experience in Vietnam and Afghanistan, two different times, places, missions, and national moods.
Robin Moore is a fine man who has given much as an author to the history of our branch. This was not his best effort.
This book is best used as a beverage coaster, placed under the cold drinks of those who were actually there while they recall the deeds of others, their frustrations, and the pride of their service. For those who weren't there, this book is best used at the beach to keep the sand off your suntan oil botle while you read light fiction that is truthfully advertised as such.

Maybe when the time is right, those with their egos in check can gather and tell their fellow citizens the truth -- a far more interesting history than this fantasy.

Impossible to have any confidence in this book
By Christopher Nieman
The sheer potential of this book makes it extremely seductive -- it is an account of the Green Beret "A" teams in action in Afghanistan in 2001, written by the author of the first book about the Green Berets way back in 1965. At first glance, it's easy to believe that this might be the definitive early work about war in the post-September 11th world.

But as they say, you should never judge a book by its cover, and there's no better example of that maxim than this incredibly uneven and deceiving book.

I have to say I am grateful to the many cautionary reviews here. They helped soften the blows of aggravation and disappointment early on in the reading, as I learned where the book's center of balance was.

By any reasonable standard, this book is sketchily researched and often very poorly written. In my opinion, the quality of writing in this book would score low marks in any reputable high school. Sources and quotations are almost nonexistent in the text (and lazily compiled in the appendices), and there isn't a single corroborative interview acknowledged. There appear to be no first-hand accounts of enemy engagements shared directly with the author for his book. Battle descriptions are so unreliable that it's impossible to trust the veracity of any of the reports.

The book contains so much hearsay that if the manuscript had ever darkened the desk of a professional fact-checker, it's probable it would never have made it to press. Moore (or his ghostwriter, perhaps) uses extremely declarative language that makes it read more like the adrenaline-charged propaganda of a military pulp novel than anything even remotely resembling journalism.

This cannot possibly be considered an unbiased examination of the war in Afghanistan. The Afghanistan war deserves first-class treatment from a professional writer, and unfortunately this is not an example. It reads more like a personal memoir of news reports from the period rather than a direct piece of history. It is arguably the worst-written book I have ever read, and it merits the only one-star review I have ever written on Amazon to this date. Just say no.

I was there
By Greg
The author is faced with a chance to write the story as it actually happened and Mr. Moore lost that opportunity. Now this book will forever be known as a complete work of fiction by those of us who were there, conducted the operations and then interviewed by Robin Moore as to what happened. Venturing too far off the path of validity was perhaps due in part to his "buddy" Jack Idema, who is referenced far too much throughout the book. Mr Idema is a compelete work of something else, just google search the name. In short, disappointing is too nice a word for the effort.
