Guban allows one to fully appreciate and differentiate between the subtle ways of the Somali city-dweller and those in the hinterland - in their manners, customs, and ways. Ega manages to beautifully weave even the particularly florid speech of the Somalis through the astoundingly written dialogue. For the non-Somali speaker, one is almost able to understand and feel the richness of the Somali language. More importantly, Ega is able to bring forth the entire society with its many peculiarities to the reader. Through Guban, one is introduced to the existential crisis of the Commander Beheyeah, the ostentatious and haughty nature of Ali Deray, the vast losses of Hoagsaday, and the tumultuous journey of Tusmo and her two children whilst they establish themselves in the Diaspora. Travel with Tusmo as she carefully broaches her many arising complications in her once serene life.

Through Guban, one is not only able to understand the makings of another society (one entrenched in loyalty to one's family and clan) but also comprehend the manifestations of this on the Cold-War era modern state.

But, in the end, one realizes that though Tusmo, Beheyeah, Hoagsaday, and even Ali Deray may seem like foreign characters in a different world, their needs, wants, desires, problems, and complications are common to us all, and part and parcel of what makes us human.

Guban reads as a post-colonial, postmodern historical picture of Somali society within the rural hinterland and larger cities in relation to an increasingly interconnected global world. It’s rich portrayal of Somali style, women, food, culture and even manners allows the reader to envision, touch and almost taste all these aspects of Somal life. The adventures of Tusmo reveals a story of loyalty, faith and love as she traverses the darker hills and roads of Africa in pursuit of a reunion with her husband. In comparison, her husband Hoagsaday also attempts to battle his way back to his wife, and family in his own heroic fashion of love and commitment. As they both flee their home at different times in order to seek asylum in other nations their world as they knew is shattered into oblivion. While attempting to reunify their once whole family they are both faced with many a hardship and difficulty but remain steadfast in one untied notion; the reunification of their once whole family.

Guban is a wonderful book with a lot of insights through its complex and lovable characters. You are immediately sucked in from the first page inTo this seemingly discreet place worlds apart from our own. Only to understand through these beautiful humans; in their travials, hopes, dreams and human imposed difficulties. We are closer however far that we think. Guban is at once a love affair, a quest for the same in return. And a thorough depiction of the 20th centuries' through the gaze of disinfranchized citizens, the state, region and how the all of this revolves around the larger world of the Cold war. This is an intimate history and so many other things. I can say so much more, but really and truly want others to self discover. You are inserted and become witness and truly immersed in the story. I felt i was there.

Excellent Book to get started...

This book came with my Garrett AT Pro. It has fascinating full page pictures and makes for some interesting info. I would highly reccomend it for anybody looking to get started with a Garrett Machine and basic to intermediate relic hunting skills. Its just fun to see what other have found....also well put together too.

Disregard the other guy who gave it one star...everbody knows this is a 5 star!!!!

It helped me use my AT Pro a bit better and get a nice overall knowledge of how a DD and concentric coil worked......

Excellent book on the subject

This book is 500+ pages of useful info and full color illustrations in 24 chapters. Anyone from the beginner to the expert can learn something from this book. It covers everything from figuring out where to search, legal issues, possible ways to get permission to search and how to treat your finds when you recover them as well as information on specific types of relics you may interested in searching for. The only thing missing is a section on meteorite hunting, but Geoff Notkin (of Meteorite Men) has a book out that covers that subject thoroughly.

As for the previous review, there is some Garret specific information in the book, but RAM Publishing is a division of Garrett Metal Detectors so I would expect some of that. Check the copyright page - they don't hide that fact. That said, there is very little in this book that is not transferable to any brand metal detector you might want to use and I don't feel in the least that this book is an advertisement. In the interest of giving some perspective, I am a user of both Fisher and Garrett metal detectors and like both brands.

Rarely find metal detect books w/ so many color photos

This is a great book with scores, of full color glossy photos of found relics! The emphasis seems mostly on 1. civil war relics and 2. revolutionary war relics/other military relics of 1800s.
The book is published by a subsidiary of Garrett electronics (detectors) and therefore shows a lot of Garrett MD finds, etc, but the photos and information is applicable to any name brand detector for the most part. Perhaps 1/2 of one percent is strictly Garrett info.
The good info on identifying CW relics is worth the cost of the book, from Minie balls to CW buttons, cannon balls, military insignia, Republic of Texas buttons, 1800s Mexican army relics found in Texas, buckles of all types, some European relics, even some WWII relics included. I have identified several items I have found but did not know that were CW rifle parts due to this book.
I highly suggest this above all other general interest MD books on the market if you are interested in finding old US military relics with your metal detector!

No cliffhanger warning!

I hate when I read a synopsis and it doesn't tell you To Be Continued. If I would have know this I would have never gotten part one.
All in all it was an ok book. Overworked burned out city girl needs to get away. She quits her job and books a month long trip to a dude ranch in the west. There she meets a couple of hot cowboys, one of which may be the man of her dreams...
I probably won't read book two. If they would have made it all one book then maybe I would but when they try to trick you with a freebie for part one and then ask you to pay for the rest, I don't think so.

I thought this book (and this series so far) has been just ok. I don't particularly like it when books have the multi-part books (but I will read some of them if I am enjoying enough to continue). However, I thought this book was just alright so far. It may have gotten more interesting for me in future books, but I wasn't really interested enough to find out.

That is the danger in these multi-part books. Its possible that I would have really ended up enjoying this book and this author, but I won't bother to download the rest of the book parts and find out since this first part wasn't that interesting for me. However, if this book had been all together, so that I wasn't taken out of this story to have to go get another part of it, I likely would have kept reading the book until the end (I don't tend to give up on books unless I really hate them).

Can't beat Broadview. They make a great abridgment which conveys continuity without having to wade through the excessive amount of pages in the original.

Needed this for a class

The subtleties in this text are very easy to miss, and it requires a very careful, thorough reading. It is rife with religious allusions, and as an epistolary novel, you can never really be sure if you're getting an accurate accounting of events from any of the characters, although the main character is by far the most reliable.

A wonderful little book for those who are just starting to look

This is an awesome little book for those who are just starting to look into this perennial issue.
Fully persuaded calvi's will not find anything new or stimulating to sharpen their swords on here.
No letter-by-letter exegesis, no smarting accusations.
Just a very simple review of the scriptures which, on-surface, read as-is, along with the classic Caliv interpretation which reads them otherwise.
The standard replacements of "All", "World", "Men" with the word "Elect", within select verses necessary to support the theology.
And the numerous other verses which make one scratch the head looking for the possible logic, when likewise changed.

- Man is held responsible for that which he is not response-able.

- A review of the proposition that God gives commands to men which He refuses to allow them to obey, and then condemns them for their disobedience.

- A review of the proposition that God created the vast majority of human souls throughout time, for the express purpose of watching them twist in torments within an eternal lake of fire, simply for good entertainment.
(a view not adhered to by all Calvi's)

- A review of the proposition that since God finds human sufferings entertaining, such entertainment is also acceptable for His elect to impose on the non-elect today.
(a view not adhered to by all Calvi's)

- A review of the proposition that God plants the seed (of salvation) within the soil (human soul) involuntarily.....symbolic of rape.
Based upon the reasoning: If the woman (human soul) actually voluntarily gave herself to the seed planting process (salvation) this would be considered work, and therefore the seed planting process could not be considered a free gift, therefore exemplified as rape. (a view not adhered to by all Calvi's)

- A review of the proposition that God proposes marriage (evangelism of the unsaved) to those whom He has no intention of marrying.
That is to say, God offers salvation to those whom He has no intention of giving it to. Therefore His offer is made without integrity.

My own personal observations, external to the content of this book:
If one carefully and quietly examines the observable fruits before stepping into the spider-web of exegesis, it is suggested that one will recognize the following:

Observable demographics from inception to today.
- A belief system exclusively for to the white Anglo-Saxon male with a bent for intellectualism, philosophy, an over-sized ego, and a need to belong to an advanced guild.
- A body posture which predominates chest puffed out, nose up high.
- A full allowance made for all historical acts of torture, mutilation and murder on those outside the guild.
- On aggregate, a persona of grandiose self-perception. A strong manifestation of Christian narcissism.

So, if your just looking, this little book is a great read.
And while your examining the fruit, see if you don't also recognize the observables listed. I think you'll find it entertaining. :^D

Short but good.

This small book is, of course, insufficient to fully refute all of the basic arguments of the Calvinistic system. It is, nevertheless, a well-written and thought-out summary of the non-Calvinist, non-Arminian alternative. I wish Calvinists could look at a work like this and realize the problems we have with Calvinism, rather than just hate on us for not understanding Scripture the same way they do.
Contrary to the claims of the critics, Bryson does not use “the same old Arminian arguments.” He does use the same verses, but seriously, what do the Calvinists want from us? (Besides, they do the same.) But Bryson does not use those verses in the same way Arminians do at all. He uses them to treat entirely different issues within the debate.
Some of Bryson’s best points are hard to be answered. He does well knocking down Calvin’s covenant theology on page 28. On pages 33-35, he does well exposing the harder view of double-predestination, showing Calvin and other superior teachers to hold to Sproul’s definition of “hyper-Calvinism.” On pages 68-71 he does a phenomenal job showing John Calvin to be inconsistent regarding the “regeneration precedes faith” point. His response to Boettner on page 76 is priceless. Finally, I love what he wrote on page 53: “From a thoroughly Calvinistic perspective…just as no amount of preaching will help the unelect, no failure of Christians to reach out to the elect will hinder them from coming to Christ.”
On another note, that Douglas Wilson (who is a Calvinist) gave a positive review on the back cover ought to lead people to watch how they speak about this book. Let the reader understand: We have serious problems with Calvinism that Calvinists simply refuse to answer. We reject Calvinism and Arminianism alike because we see what we believe to be a thorough wresting of the Scriptures on both sides.

A powerful Anti-War story. Highly Recommended!

After seeing the excellent movies from Stanley Kubrick, I decided to read the novel, which it was based upon. Being out of print, it was difficult to locate. But I finally found a copy at a local library. It was worth searching.
Paths of Glory was written by Humphrey Cobb and first published in 1935. Cobb, who had served in the Canadian Army during the First World War, wrote this novel as an anti-war statement. In my opinion, it's one of the best. Cobb shows an unpositive view of war. There are no heroes. Not even Regiment Commander Colonel Dax is the courageous man he was in Kubrick's film. He doesn't even have that big of a part.
French General Assolant is given orders by his Army Commander (Whose name is not revealed) to take an important German position called the Pimple. To take the "Pimple", Assolant calls the 181st regiment, which was supposed to be placed on leave.
We see the attack beforehand from the eyes of those on the battlefield. A patrol is sent out, where one of the men gets killed by the drunken commander due to a careless accident. The incident is covered up, but would play a part later.
The next morning, the eargely anticipated attack on the Pimple is launched. It proves however to be impossible. The 181st is made up of a combination of battle weary vets and fresh new recruits to compensate for losses. Thus, casualties are high. The bombardment from artillery and machine guns also is so difficult to go through that many soldiers never even leave the trenches. Believing the men are mutinying, Assolant orders the battery commander to fire on the men. Fortunately, in what may be the only sensible act in the novel, the man refuses without a written order. Assolant then orders a court martial to preserved his dignity at the expense of others.
Four men are selected: One from each of the attacking sections. One section refuses to send a man but the other three select. The men are sent in front of a court-martial with a well-trained lawyer at their side. But it is really more of a Kangaroo Court. This is because the Indictment against the convicted is not read ("It basically states the accused are convicted of cowardice"), no Stenographic notes are kept of the trial, thus denying the convicted the possibility of a pardon, and the defense is not allowed to build its case. For example, when an attempt is made to call witnesses, it can only be "To prove that they made it to the enemy wire", which no one of the regiment did. And when the defense attempts to state the decorations one of the men has received (So it can be shown he isn't a coward) the president of the council says "The men are on trial for their current cowardice, not their former bravery" and that "Medals are no defense".
What is most ludicrous is the line of questioning on the defendants. It is absurd in the way it forces the men to answer irrelevant questions. An example by the President of the council on the convicted Private Ferol:
President: Did you advance?
Ferol: Yes, Sir.
President: How far did you advance?
Ferol: To about the middle of no man's land.
President: Then what did you do?
Ferol: Well, the Boche machine guns were like a hailstorm and I saw that-
President: No. Answer my question. What did you do?
Ferol: Well, sir, I saw that me and Meyer-
President: I didn't ask you what you saw. I asked you what you did.
Ferol: Yes, sir.
President: Did you advance?
Ferol: Not after I saw that me and Meyer-
President: Did you turn round and go back?
Ferol: Well, when I saw that-
President: Attention! Answer my question. Did you turn round and go back? Yes or no?
Ferol: Yes, sir.
This edition (Paperback, University of Georgia Press, 1987) includes a fascinating afterward by Stephen E. Tabachnick. He mentions about the book's placement of the chain of command and about themes from the book.
Sadly, Paths of Glory has become largely underrated over the years. My English teacher hadn't even heard of it. This book should be put back in publishing as soon as possible so more people can experience how great it is and should be recommended reading at schools so people can see how ridiculous war can be.

The Irony of Glory

Soldiers have forever obeyed the commands of officers, knowing sometimes that to obey the command was to die and to refuse to obey it was to die. Compound the situation when the officer is acting solely in self-interest, for pride's sake, for the sake of a promotion, for his own ego regardless of the lives of the men he leads. The paths they must follow, the paths of glory, leads but to the grave.
This army is French, but it could be any nation's, any year's, any war. Cobb's evocation of pride and prejudice affectinfg the lives of innocent men is scary in that we know it is not over.

Intense. The best book on WWI

The other reviews posted here tell the details, but as for a description of the horrors of WWI, this is the book to read. I have no idea why this book has been out of print for decades. It should be heralded more than All Quiet on the Western Front, as it is so much more intense. The descriptions of the shellings, and the description of the battle for the Pimple will leave you stunned. This is one of the best books I have ever read (or re-read several times). This is the one book I have recommended to friends, but never lent for fear of it not being returned. Do not hesitate to purchase this book, since we don't know if it will disappear again soon.
