“This text is concise and doesn’t intimidate the undergraduate student. Students need the bottom line. Currently, this text does that.”
–Justin J. Wageman, North Dakota State University
“This text is very informative. It is not easy to find a book on discipline that includes the material that this one does.”
–Barrie A. Brancato, Clarian University
“I have used this text since I began teaching classroom management six years ago. I have reviewed many others but still find this one to best meet the needs of the students.

a beginners book
By happybride
the book isn't bad for a first book into education. it gives you insight to a lot of general situations you will encounter and need to prepare for.
however, it doesn't tell you how to deal with bad or mis behavior. it basically says that all bad behavior is the teachers fault. in addition to the fact that children mis behave when they aren't fed/sleeping at night/safe, etc. i can understand that it's teaching a future teacher to handle everything independently, and that everything is in the teachers control... but... it's not. it's too idealistic in my opinion. the fact is that some students are out of a teachers control, not all administration in a school actually helps (some do the opposite), and then it says to contact all these professionals before the parents. nuts. in my opinion, teachers should try to help all children, but realize that there are some that slip through the cracks. it's also not always useful to talk to administration. they can make life more difficult or shoot you down for even considering helping the kids. additionally, contacting a professional prior to the parent and/or administration can lead to teacher problems.
involve parents first. for both the good and the bad.
as far as misbehaving students, at least it tells you that you'll get frustrated and act inappropriately at times. Teachers are still humans, not robots yet... but it still says it in a condescending manner. it tells you the reasons students misbehave, but doesn't provide solutions for it.
all in all, it's good for a beginner. not for an experienced educator.

Great primer for new teachers and veterans alike.
By P. Zack
I'm a classroom teacher with 20 years experience. Recently I needed to take additional courses to renew my certification. I thought that as a veteran of the classroom, nothing in the book would suprise me. However, even I found sections of the book to be useful. For the new teacher, this book offers a great summary of techniques, philosophies, and theories but also practical suggestions and knowledge that make this book more useful than the standard educational theory textbook. All in all, highly recommended.

Not Impressed
By Kimberly L Mueller
I was not impressed with this textbook despite its backing of the NAEYC. As an example, in one of the chapters it tells the reader to exhaust all discipline resources BEFORE involving the parents. This makes very little sense in the real world as often parents are aware of issues that may contribute to behavioral problems. Notifying the parents last also serves to alienate the parents rather than involve them in the educational process. This is just one example of many contained in the text that are too easy to misinterpret or too poorly written to serve as valuable. We used this text for a child guidance class at a university just one quarter before tossing it out.
