Good basic introduction

I bought this book to assist with me the geographic analysis of human rights violations in Zimbabwe. I have no prior experience or qualifications in geography or GIS, but have taken to the field through the necesssity of the work that I do. This book is a technical and mathematical introduction to geographical information analysis. It helps you understand the principles of eg kriging, or the different sorts of geographical data (point, line and polygon) and the kinds of analysis one can do with them. It does this fairly efficiently and it has certainly given me some ideas on possible future paths to take.
However, it is more of a technical guide to the methods than an ideas book. And although I did not understand everything on the first pass, I must say that I imagine more experienced or technical people would be rather disappointed at the depth of the content. It seems a bit simple, and is clearly aimed as an undergrad primer.

Too much history, not enough application

I read this book because it was required for a graduate level environmental science course. Although it progresses nicely, it gets caught up in the research history pertaining to every model, process etc.. It also lacks application in many instances and guidance on how to conduct the actual analysis. I would recommend this text to be used in purely geography classes and not by separate disciplines that dabble in geography.

About the Author
Guitar players may not recognize Joe Carr's name at first, but his face is probably familiar. That's because he appears in over 20 instructional guitar videos ranging from country to western swing, bluegrass and even heavy metal! Add to these his videos on mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and ukulele and Joe may be the most recorded video music instructor anywhere. Joe is a self-taught musician originally from Denton, Texas who started guitar at age 13, inspired by the folk musicians of the 1960's. A few years later, he was hired to play guitar in Alan Munde's internationally known bluegrass group, Country Gazette. Over the next six years Joe recorded 3 group albums, numerous sideman projects and produced his own critically acclaimed solo guitar album, Otter Nonsense. Joe left the Country Gazette in 1984 and joined the music faculty in the unique commercial music program at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. Throughout the 1990s he continued to record and perform with former Gazette leader and South Plains College colleague Alan Munde. In addition to two albums on the Flying Fish label, Joe and Alan have published an award-winning book about West Texas Country Music called Prairie Nights to Neon Lights from the Texas Tech University Press. Joe is editor of Mel Bay's Mandolin Sessions� and Ukulele Sessions� webzines and is also a regular columnist for Flatpicking Guitar magazine and Mandolin Magazine. He was awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association's Distinguished Achievement award in 2008.

I Love This Book / Joe Carr's Books

A "beginning" intermediate player, I know more than cowboy chords, first position, but have yet to play lead or connect the bits of basic skills and knowledge. This book and CD are addicting.

The book is easy to follow, but still challenging enough to be rewarding when I "get it." I feel like I'm actually going somewhere with my skills now. The whole book seems laid out really well - easy to follow, not too complicated, and it all makes sense. The skills taught are basic and generic, but interesting, and very useable once learned. Mr. Carr breaks the lessons and examples down into segments, then puts them together.

I read music like I speak Spanish - slowly. I like that Carr's examples are both in tablature and standard musical notation. I know enough musical notation to have a better overall understanding of the material through these examples. I feel really pleased that Mr. Carr explains the full and/or abbreviated chord shapes as he goes along, and the relation of the licks to these shapes up and down the neck. I am also pleased that the fretting hand "start" finger is often given when the material changes between chords or positions.

At first I thought the sound files were a wee bit fast. I've decided I like them as they are. I could use a "slow-downer" program, but I'm getting it as is! I put the CD sound files on my iPod, make a playlist with only the lesson I'm working on, continually looping the same tune until I'm ready to practice on my own.

So pleased with this book, and my other Joe Carr books. In over 30 years of guitar playing, much of it "stuck" in folk/three chord country songs and power chords, I'm making real progress.

My favorite guitar books ever! In Texas, our official state music is Western Swing and the official state instrument is guitar.

False advertising

The Amazon description for this says, "Western Swing master Joe Carr has transcribed the great guitar solos from the Bob Wills band and other greats and breaks them down note by note into useful licks that can be used to improvise original hot solos. Includes solos by western swing legends Eldon Shamblin, Jimmy Wyble, Leon Rhodes, Junior Benard (often called the first rockabilly) and more."

None of that is true. This book doesn't contain a single transcription of an actual solo played by any of those men. Rather, it contains several "in the style of" solos written by Joe Carr. Like many of these method books, the examples are very inferior to the real thing. Many of them sound awkward and atonal in places.

I gave the book three stars anyway because it does a good job of explaining some of the theory behind the style, so I think it's a useful instructional aid. But if you really want to learn tasty "take off" western swing solos, you'll still have to transcribe real ones on your own, and maybe transcribe recordings of yourself singing improvised solos over chord progressions, assuming that you're already familiar with the style by listening to it.

This book will help you understand the theory behind western swing, but don't expect it to teach you to actually play the style in a tasty manner. That's going to require a lot of additional work.

Great Book, Well Done..

Well written and clearly explained. The examples include both lead and rhythm aspects of Western Swing guitar. The book in only 48 pages so the while well done there are not a lot of examples given. Good basis for improvisation. I'd say beginner to itermediate or advanced players not familiar with Westen Swing.

Nabokov's fourth novel, The Eye is as much a farcical detective story as it is a profoundly refractive tale about the vicissitudes of identities and appearances. Nabokov's protagonist, Smurov, is a lovelorn, excruciatingly self-conscious Russian emigre living in prewar Berlin, who commits suicide after being humiliated by a jealous husband, only to suffer even greater indignities in the afterlife.

About the Author
One of the twentieth century’s master prose stylists, Vladimir Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg in 1899. He studied French and Russian literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, then lived in Berlin and Paris, where he launched a brilliant literary career. In 1940 he moved to the United States, and achieved renown as a novelist, poet, critic and translator. He taught literature at Wellesley, Stanford, Cornell, and Harvard. In 1961 he moved to Montreux, Switzerland, where he died in 1977.

Eye Scream Ewe Scream We All Scream...

... for more Nabokov! If only he'd been as prolific as Anthony Trollope. This short novella, written in Berlin in 1930, is not nearly the apex of Nab's oeuvre, but it's awfully good. Even when no one could mistake his lepidopterine syntax, it's fun to see him writing in a new genre with every book. The Eye is a tale in the 'doppelg�nger' tradition of Poe's William Wilson, Hawthorne's Wakefield, and Melville's The Confidence Man, though there's no reason to assume that Nabokov was aware of his American forerunners. Since the whole novella is built around the reader's dawning suspicions, I can't say much more about the plot without spoiling your pleasure.

The Marxist Revolution makes a cameo appearance in The Eye - its Russian title was closer to 'The Spy' - as in nearly all of Nab's books. In a brief dismissal of historical determinism, he writes: "Luckily no such laws exist: a toothache will cost a battle, a drizzle cancel an insurrection. Everything is fluid, everything depends on chance, and all in vain were the efforts of that crabbed bougeois in Victorian checkered trousers, author of Das Kapital, fruit of insomnia and migraine. There is a titillating pleasure in looking back at the past and asking oneself 'What would have happened if...' and substituting one chance occurrence for another, observing how, from a gray, barren, humdrum moment in one's life, there grows forth a marvelous rosy event that in reality had failed to flower. A mysterious thing, this branching structure of life..." That, my friends, is not only an eloquent dismissal of Marxism but also a fine statement of evolutionary contingency.

"And yet I am happy. Yes, happy. I swear, I swear I am happy. I have realized that the only happiness in this world is to observe, to spy, to watch, to scrutinize one self and others, to be nothing but a big, slightly vitreous, somewhat bloodshot, unblinking eye. I swear that this is happiness."
Okay, I'll accept that, as long as this eye has another Nabokov novel to read.

One of Nabokov's best novels.

The Eye is often overlooked because it is so short (around 100 pages in most editions) and because it turns on a gimmick: the narrator kills himself near the start of the story and then finds that his thoughts live on "by momentum." But it is Nabokov's special gift to make his tricks more than just tricks, and The Eye is the first of his books to do this on a grand scale. In some ways this is among the most moving of Nabokov's works, as well as one of the most entertaining.

Not his best, but essential

In later works, Nabokov mused on the nature of identity with sharper, more amusing, and more penetrating results. But this book, by my count, was his first lengthy foray into the subject. In Smurov, he created a character whose self-image is an attempt at an amalgamation of the Smurov's everyone who knows him sees. A fun meditation on the importance of the opinions of others and a compelling death story. Much more, of course. And, of course, beautiful, beautiful.

A great buy!

This word search book is great! I received a copy at a discounted price in exchange for an honest review and I think with over 100 puzzles it will keep us busy for a long time. I like the answer key right on the next page instead of having to flip to the end of the book. Very easy to navigate.

My favorite. I had a copy as a young child that I poured over to figure out the humor. I wore the book out and lost it after I moved out from my family's home. Now, four decades later, it's just as delightful as I remember, concluding with "You certainly have a peculiar sense of humor."
