About the Author
Lucy F. Ackert is Professor of Finance in the Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University and Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Dr. Ackert holds a Ph.D. in financial economics from Emory University. Her research interests include individual's use of information and financial market reaction to information. Dr. Ackert has published numerous articles in refereed journals including the American Economic Review, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Finance. In 1993 Dr. Ackert received a Smith Breeden Prize for Distinguished Paper in the Journal of Finance. Her research has received funding from various organizations including the Center for the Study of Futures Markets at Columbia University, the Chicago Board of Trade, the Canadian Investment Review, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. In 2008 Dr. Ackert received the Kennesaw State University Distinguished Graduate Scholarship Award. Dr. Ackert has previously taught at Emory University, Berry College, and Wilfrid Laurier University. She has taught a range of courses for graduate as well as undergraduate students, including Behavioral Finance, Corporate Finance, Futures and Options Markets, Financial Institutions, Cases in Finance, Introduction to Statistical Methods, and Microeconomics.

Richard Deaves is Professor of Finance at the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University. There and elsewhere he has taught a variety of courses, including Behavioral Finance, Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, Derivatives, and Applied Investment Management. In addition to McMaster, Dr. Deaves has visited at the University of Toronto, Concordia University, Thammasat University, Tsinghua University, and others. Dr. Deaves research publications have appeared in numerous journals, such as the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Banking and Finance, and the Journal of Monetary Economics. His main research interests have included behavioral finance, investor knowledge and pension fund design, experimental asset markets, investment fund performance, fixed-income return enhancement, modeling and predicting interest rates, pricing and hedging futures, and the relationship between financial markets and the macroeconomy. Additionally, Dr. Deaves has consulted for large and small private firms as well as government agencies. He has also provided expert testimony in a number of legal proceedings. He has previously published two books: What Kind of an Investor Are You? (Insomniac Press) and Canadian Finance: A Concise Introduction (DFS Press).

Disappointed

The content is fascinating. And the authors clearly know the field well. But I believe this is a case of very knowledgeable people who unfortunately lack the skill of explaining things well. In some instances in the book, a concept is introduced and not explicitly defined. In another that comes to mind, part of a mathematical equation is dropped without explanation. The writing style is pedantic. The book generally reads as if it wasn't edited, or was edited by someone who knows too much about the field to be able to identify when something isn't adequately explained. The use of words such as, "obviously," and "clearly," are tell-tale signs of a lack of empathy from the authors of the reader's perspective. The math in the book actually isn't overly complicated, but it could have been made so much easier than how it was presented. My wife, who has a better head for numbers than me, rewrote some of the math sections in a more straightforward way and I understood immediately what had eluded me upon reading the book. I don't want to make the authors feel badly; I appreciate how difficult writing text books must be and applaud the effort here. I would suggest that in a second edition, you think of the Malcolm Gladwell books or Freakonomics as guides for writing style. You don't need to dumb it down. But perhaps consider moving out of the abstract realm onto the concrete when you can. If you took the same content and explained it better, you could have a book that makes an important contribution to finance.

Very nice survey book
By Calibration
The authors provide solid and excellent survey of the fields (behavior of retail investors, professional managers, analysts, traders and market-wide asset prices) and make the materials accessible to undergraduate and master students (I used the book in my master class) as well as interested professionals. Other books either lack breadth and depth, or only target PhD students or researchers (Shleifer, Thaler, etc).

The fields develop fast so I suggest the authors update the book in its 2nd edition.

The best of both worlds

This book explains the pros and cons of puree feeding and baby-led-weaning and let's you decide (without guilt) what you think is best for your baby. It was helpful for me to understand, so I could explain my final decision better to friends and family. I have decided to do baby-led weaning and no purees, but if I was somewhere where all I had was purees, I wouldn't have a problem feeding those to him too. I think the author did a good job to present both sides and help fight against the mommy wars. I read "Baby Led Weaning" by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett after I read this one, and I don't think it really gave a guilt trip, but it was nice to understand both options first.

Yes it's written by the British and they call doctors "healthcare visitors," but I don't think that took away from the content. "Baby Led Weaning" does the same thing. In fact, we call it "Baby Led Solids" in the U.S. to avoid confusion with stopping breastfeeding. You keep breastfeeding while letting baby slowly learn to eat solids on his own.

Excellent Advice for Nursing Moms too

Even though this book is geared towards a European/UK audience, I really enjoyed how the author gave specific advice as to how much solids a baby is to eat as well as how much the baby should be drinking too. I found as a nursing mother a lot of the solids books failed to explain how often my son should nurse as well as how much solids he should be eating. Weaning Made Easy gave me a good guideline and peace of mind knowing that I was giving my son good nutrition for his growing body.

Helped me decide

I wasn't sure how I wanted to start solids with my babe. I bought this book because I heard a lot about Baby Led Weaning but the pediatrician suggested rice cereal and pur�es. This gave me the information I was looking for without being biased. I appreciate that it gives pros and cons for both methods. We decided to use a combination approach. It seems silly to say but I didn't really realize that it didn't have to be one way or the other. We just do what works in the moment and my 5 month old is loving it.

ARYANNE OADE is a Chartered Psychologist and the owner of an established and successful coaching and development business. Aryanne regularly works with senior level clients on the complex interpersonal issues surrounding building and retaining influence at work. Since 1994 she has designed and delivered over 140 bespoke executive coaching programmes and over 110 tailored professional skills workshops for managers and leaders across the UK, Europe and North America. Most of these programmes have involved working with clients on key workplace influencing issues. Aryanne has also run twenty four workshops on the skills of gaining and sustaining influence at work for five investment banks.

Aryanne has appeared on C4 speaking about customer complaints handling, has given an address on 'Creativity in Business' at the British Association for the Advancement of Science and has appeared on Radio 4 speaking on the same topic. She has spoken at both the Leeds and York Institute of Directors Breakfast Meetings on 'Politics, Power and Profit'; and once at the British Psychological Society's Annual Conference on 'Stress Levels Among South Yorkshire Probation Officers.' She is a member of the British Psychological Society's Special Group in Coaching Psychology and holds general membership at the Division of Occupational Psychology. She is also a Member of the Association for Coaching. Aryanne lives on a farm in Yorkshire from where she runs her business.

Don't bother underlining because every sentence is important

This book is the most comprehensive book I've seen in this field. The author begins with a basic coverage of camera operation, lighting, sound, etc. Then, he goes in depth to documentary idea, organization, planning, budgeting, dealing with the crew, dealing with the "talent". The editing section was a surprise bonus for me. I've learned more about editing from this book than from any other book I've read. The author is obviously a great filmmaker and a great teacher. Many other books about filmmaking or video production contain a lot of extraneous words that are entertaining at best and insulting at worst. This author treats the reader as an intelligent person with a serious desire to learn about making documentaries.

Rabinger as a writer has a superbly no-nonsense approach to his subject matter, and the book covers every aspect of the life of the documentary film. He explores the key elements of creating the the work (or body of work) and fits a series of practical steps and tips for each element.

These elements include: Historical Background, Preproduction, Production, Post-Production, Technical Basics, Projects for Developing Skills, and Career Track.

The appendices and the annotated bibliography are very useful, and the book is worth the price just for these additions.

Directing the Documentary

An excellent book, especially for those who are new in the field. Among other things, Michael Rabiger guides you through a brief history of the documentary genre, helps you discover your creative identity, acquaintes you with the film vocabulary, and introduces you to the genre through a variety of projects that you are encouraged to undertake. Directing the Documentary is definitely a textbook (no wonder it's one of the "must read" books at the Department of TV Documentary in Goldsmith's College in London) and Michael Rabiger is an excellent teacher. Lacking the pretentiousness of many other teachers, he uses simple language to describe various aspects of the documentary and never underestimates his reader / student. A lover of the genre himself, he knows how to make you feel confident for having chosen the documentary as a career. He never patronizes you and all the advice that he gives is given with a friendly and generous tone. Mr Rabiger is a thoughtful and sensitive teacher, but also an excellent author, or "storyteller," as he prefers to call the documentarist. His words flow, like in a good novel, making you want to read on and on, while at the same time they are so pregnant with meaning that they make you stop and think about them. Having read his book, and being a student myself, I would like to say a warm "thank you" to Mr Rabiger for his sensitivity and generosity as a teacher.
