The truth revealed

During the past few years, I've heard about the genius of Rand, but now I know for certain. My son gave me this book and I'm grateful for it. Ayn Rand has assembled twenty essays written primarily during the 1960s. She presents cogent arguments that expose the hypocrisy of the socialism and the moral supremacy of capitalism. Socialism is certainly something to fear!

Rand juxtaposes the differences between ambiguity and morality, collectivism and free enterprise, socialism and liberty, self-serving power grabs and altruism, propaganda and truth, and the ongoing struggle between emotion and reason. She exposes socialism for what it is and emphasizes the importance of true liberty and true freedom. I wonder what she would say about the current federal regime, the cover-ups, and the complicity of the mainstream media!

I can recommend this book and will certainly endeavor to read more of Rand's works.

Good story

This is a coming of age story about a couple of high school boys. The author needs to polish his writing skills, but it was fairly well written and provided an entertaining diversion.

Probably no one is ever truly well. Adjusted and happy during the adventure, but somehow most survive with some permanent scars to show for it, and some seem to glide through on looks and reputation. The few who missed the give away on beauty, social skills, and have to learn survival skills and hope for good luck to never be noticed. As everyone tries to develop their independence and life plans, no one wants to be to unusual in clothing styles, activities, abilities, and responsibilities. Hormones mess with the mind and body, but do not offer any clear path to success. The clicks form around similarities and want-to-bes more than the exclusions in the shadows. Self image pain and heartbreak are guaranteed for all if they have any awareness, but the sexual preference is the minefield that no one can escape without help. Guilty until proven innocent is the charge, and even if no sexual experience has occupied, how do you prove it has not happened? The only relief is from a true friend with understanding, because past history i

A nice entry from a new writer

This is a good story. It is a simple precept yet complicated in how it unfolds (as life often is) and in all of it, it seems very realistic. The book did seem a bit choppy, but I also realise that this is a new author and I cannot say I would do any better in my first outing. I would recommend this book and I am actually on the follow up book at this point. I like how Jay writes.

12. Ali, Muhammad

During the fourth round of his first big fight versus Sonny Liston, February 25, 1964, Muhammad Ali became blinded by ordinary liniment from his opponent. But he suspected foul play and wanted to quit, screaming to his corner, "I can't see. Cut off the gloves!" But manager Angelo Dundee refused to let him, and instructed Ali to "yardstick" Liston with his jab. Ali went back out and fought the fifth round with his right eye closed. Ali wiped his eyes as Liston charged, and whenever he got within range, he reached out and stuck his glove on his head for as long as he could. Ali's arms were longer than Liston's; he knew he had to keep Liston at arm's length, unable to land a knockout punch.

In the sixth round, Ali went on the attack. For the seventh, Liston failed to answer the bell. Ali was the champion. Had he quit, he never would have set the stage to come back twice more and reclaim his heavyweight title lost to Frazier in 1971 by defeating Foreman in 1974 and then Leon Spinks in 1978, making him the first to be a three-time champion.

For many, even more remarkable has been Ali's private yet public bout with Parkinson's disease. Though it has slowed his body and speech, he has refused to allow it to make him a recluse or quench his spirit.
The moral is clear: never quit. And stock your corner with friends who won't let you.

3 Kinds of Surprising Stories

Three kinds of stories in Extraordinary Comebacks inspired and entertained me. There are the human renewal stories I had already heard or read at least in part (e.g., Jimmy Piersall's) and enjoyed reading again. Then there are the comeback stories of people like Bill Gates who I had always assumed achieved success in a straight line upward. Most surprising of all are stories of people I had never heard of. One was Count Istvan Szechenyi, who at no personal gain almost single-handedly saved Hungary from oblivion more than a century before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The book's only shortcoming is that it has only 201 stories, not the 365 that would have made it perfect as a year-round daily meditation book. But if your memory span is anything like mine, two-thirds of the way through the year isn't be too soon to repeat the cycle.

It's pure inspiration.

It amazed me how little I knew about "turning points" in the lives of some very well known people. Points in their lives when they could have thrown up their hands and rightfully given up. But these 201 people didn't....all for different reasons. They didn't give up....they came back. Each vignette in the book builds upon the one which precedes it....and the message is overwhelmingly positive. It's a great read!

What a delightful book

This is a delightful book. I work a lot with entrenpreneurs, and one of the most important things they often have to deal with is an unpleasant realiazation that very few people get everything right the first time. In fact, most don't and have to comeback again and again. This book gives some very real and solid inspiration to keep trying. The author has gathered wonderful stories of how famous and ordinary people were able to comeback and overcome defeats, diseases and other disasters. I particularly liked the author's decision to gather stories from so many areas of life--doctors, artists, famous and ordinary folk all show up in the book. Buy it, read it, and send it on any of your friends who need a little more bounce in their bounceback.

Patricia A. Ireland, CMT, AHDI-F, has been active in the field of medical transcription since 1968, both as a multispecialty practitioner and as an instructor. A certified medical transcriptionist since 1981, Ms. Ireland lives in San Antonio, Texas, where she works as a freelance medical/technical author and editor. She has been a medical transcription instructor since the 1970s, has taught online medical transcription programs since 2000, and has co-authored four medical transcription textbooks for Cengage Learning. Extremely disappointed

I was looking for a book that covered Machine Learning from a practical, hands on perspective, and the "Practical Machine Learning" title certainly looked promising. Unfortunately, the only thing practical I could find in this book was the title.

I read the first five chapters and stopped; it was a huge waste of my time and my money. The book merely scratches the surface of the real topics; on the other hand, it spends a considerable amount of pages covering instructions on how to download and install software packges like Hadoop, R, Julia, etc. Most of the instructions are a poor copy and paste job from the original web sites. I don't need an entire chapter explaining how to install Hadoop - the Apache/Hadoop site has better instructions that are specific to my target operating system.

The illustrations are laughable, to say the least - very naive diagrams that were probably put together by someone who just learned how to use Power Point. They do nothing to explain concepts.

There is also quite a bit of material about ML tools that looks like it was extracted directly from the original web sites. I was looking for concrete problems, formulae, algorithms, code, etc. Couldn't find any.

Bottom line, this is a huge and expensive copy and paste scam. Stay away from it.

Keep looking for something better

NOTE: I haven't bought the book through Amazon. This is a review I made after learning ML using this book as reference.

I used this book to get introduced into the Machine Learning world. If you want a theoric guide, this book is totally recommended. The examples explained here are good enough for a beginner (you will need to look further for more definitions, though) and are pretty clear. Here, I would put 4 stars because it isn't the best guide out there.

Well, now, the reason why I reduced its rating comes in the part of configuration and code. I am using a Linux distro, so some instructions were clear. But the problem is that when configuring Hadoop and Mahout, the instructions were made by different people, so there were unclear or done steps. Ok, this is tolerable, even though it is a bad practice.

But after chapter 5, where the code examples are important, comes the nightmare. I tested the R examples of forests and few issues about importing some required libraries appeared. Ok, no problems here, just download and import it. But when I tried the rest, I only got errors. Reading the Python code, it was referencing local files from the author's computer, using deprecated functions from Scikit-learn and the code was pretty unclear to at least fix the problem. Until now I learned how to use Mahout on Eclipse (an IDE that I despise so much, but at least has a "good" integration with Maven), but still, the project has too many errors that are unclear for me, even looking through another sources. I lost too much time doing this, which I think it is not fair.

So I gave up and tried another books and sources. This book at least give a nice introduction to what kind of problems ML tries to solve, but after that, do not keep reading.

This attempts to cover a lot of material. Unfortunately, the english is poor and clunky. It's hard to imagine this was proof read by a native english speaker.

A Revival of One of the Best

My Catholic Faith was one of the treasures of my youth. The book belonged to my altar boy brothers, and so when I left home, and the Church was shrouded in modernism, I was sure I would not see that fine book again. I was pleased to see it in print once again, beautifully bound and illustrated. Because Bishop Morrow's book has not been "updated," the illustrations are a wonderful historical reference to the splendor of the Universal Church in all places.
I understood and appreciated this book at age ten. I understand and appreciate it still more as I near fifty.

Tremendous kid-commute catechism tool!

Timelessly orthodox Catholic faith, beautifully expressed. One can go into more detail by reading everything, or move faster through just the larger type in some sections. Good-sized illustrations are designed to distill abstract concepts into memorable impressions that can stick in a reader's mind.

For the past year, we've kept our copy in the back seat of the car. I ask my sons, who are 10 and 13, to read aloud from it several times a week during short regular commutes we make. I have never heard a groan! Amazing! We all freely interrupt the reading with comments and discussion.

Everybody's lives are so busy now it's hard to keep any kind of regular schedule of teaching our children their Catholic faith (as we vowed to do upon Catholic marriage). I highly recommend this way of sharing the Faith with preteens and older kids especially.

An Excellent Catechism of My Catholic Faith!

A beautiful catechism written by Bishop Louis Morrow in the 1950s. My Catholic Faith: A Catechism in Pictures was a very popular catechism in the 1950s until the 1960s. A special Jubilee Commerative edition was published in 1961, 1963, and 1965.

In the Philippines, My Catholic Faith is being published again by Catholic Trade, Inc. It is divided into 3 separate volumes and sold individually for P 36 Pesos which is about more than $0.50 in US Dollars! Sadly, the edition they reprinted was the 1965 edition under the pontificate of Pope Paul VI. It contains Modernist and other innovations such as calling Mass, "The Last Supper" or concelebration of the Liturgy by several priests. I know this because I own the 1965 edition of My Catholic Faith.

My Catholic Faith, was republished by Sarto House according to the 1954 edition prior to the Modernist revision of Pope Paul VI in 1965. It teaches the Catholic Faith very dogmatically and truthfully.

Here is an excellent example:

An anullment is when the Catholic Church declares a marriage to be null after thorough investigation and the evidence have proven that in the very beginning there had been no marriage thus it was not valid.

Nowadays, Catholics confuse anullments with divorce. Most Catholics believe they can get an anullment like getting candy from a baby. Ted Kennedy, a notorious liberal Catholic scandalizer had his 38 years of marriage "annulled" and is now married to a young woman about half his age.

I tell you this... This is an excellent catechism. It is even better than the Baltimore Catechism. It contains no Modernism or Americanism heresy teachings.

This catechism talks about everything---such as:

1. The [Tridentine] Latin Mass of the Roman Rite (prior to its simplication and revision in 1965 by Pope Paul VI and the reforms of the Second Vatican Council that preceeded the 1970 Novus Ordo Missae). It explains why Latin is used to celebrate Mass and why not the vernacular.

2. The role and organization of the Holy Office and Roman Curia* (prior to its reorganization in 1967 by Cardinal Jean Villot, the Vatican Secretary of State with the approval of Paul VI).

3. The Initiating Rank of the Priesthood---the ranks of the Minor Orders and Major Orders (prior to the abolition of the Minor Orders and radical reform of the priesthood by Pope Paul VI).

3. The Dogma of No Salvation Outside the Church.

4. Distinction between Venial Sin and Mortal Sin as well as Sacrilege.

5. The definitions of Heresy and Schism including the invalidity of the the Anglican or Episocopalian holy orders for bishops and priests according to the 1547 Edwardine Ordinal.

6. Differences between the Eastern (Uniate) Catholic Church and the heretical schismatic Eastern Orthodox churches.

7. The liturgical setting, background, and consecration of a Catholic altar according to the Roman Rite prior to the New Rite used in 1969 under Paul VI.

Florence LeLong is a free-lance photographer, illustrator, mountain leader and alpinist.

This is a great book with a good number of mostly moderate alpine routes in the Mont Blanc area. It really helped me put together a trip to Chamonix.
