Boring!!!!!!!!!!

This sad book spends too much time looking at Diana's kids and other topics not important to the general reader. One would expect a well-rounded memoir of her career, but Miss Ross leaves you hangin' on! "Set me free, why don't you, Miss Ross"!! I bought this book for $2 from a sale rack and I think it is worth that only because of the wonderful photographs. The photographs earned this book one star. If you want an inciteful look into Diana's early career with the Supremes, you would be much better off reading Mary Wilson's 2 memoirs. Otherwise, there are several unauthorized but better memoirs of her later career available.

WHAT SECRETS?

Miss Ross has done it again! Total control of a manuscript that should have wound up in the trash. No insight into the friction between her and Florence Ballard, no historical anecdotes of the recording sessions, all this book is about is Miss Ross and her family. That's fine but most people want to read about her history with the Supremes and Motown and RCA records..It has a nice cover and will make your coffee table attractive until she writes something a little more informative keep your coffee mug on top of the book you won't need to buy a coaster.

Diana Ross, stung by all of the juicy insider gossip and unauthorized biographies, wanted to sit down and tell her own side of the tale. The only problem with that is, she took the word too literally. While she does give little-known family anecdotes and photographs, she manages to smooth over every negative aspect of anything without seeming to own up to her part in it, or even acknowledging that some fault (or bad judgment, youthful naivete, whatever) of hers even exists. She treats the late Florence Ballard's alcoholism like it was a character flaw, like she and Berry played no part in her eventual destruction. And when she brings up leaving Motown or the Supremes, she waxes rhapsody like it was just a learning experience and not an attempt at (music) world domination. The result is that she paints herself to be a saint and makes her mistakes look even worse, almost as if she thinks that people who followed her career, fans or not, are stupid enough to believe in her "innocence". By attempting to hide the ugly parts, Ms. Ross only magnifies her self-deluding tendencies and she takes absolutely no responsibility for her wrongdoings, something that she should be confident enough to do at this stage in life. But since she isn't, this book is nothing but a fairy tale. If you want the REAL deal, check out "Call Her Miss Ross" and read the quotation from her at the beginning. It sums up her attitude completely. Nice try, Diana.

Very Sweet

First and foremost, the story is very much what the blurb indicates, so readers can know what they're about to read. That isn't always the case these days. And the story is as sweet as it seems. The author's take on the Beauty and the Beast story is original, and her characterization of both the heroine and hero is charming. Her choice of making the hero a werewolf was good.

I like the way Walker handled the hero particularly. Providing the wolf with an inner monologue that gives back story along with Gabriel's feelings for Kathryn is great.

The Beauty's Beast is part of Noble Publishing's Sweetheart Line, so don't look for any sex in this book. It's pure fairy tale with nothing but allusions to kissing, at most, except for an allusion to sex between the married king and queen in the story.

Overall, The Beauty's Beast is a very cute story, easily readable in one evening. If you like fairy tale retellings, pick it up and settle in for a sweet romance.

The Big GOOD Wolf

***BIG SPOILERS - BEWARE***

Happened upon this by accident. Honestly, I hate the whole "Beauty and the Beast" theme. I saw the Disney movie with my friends 20 years ago and had "Be My Guest" going through my head for 3 years. (Oh great, now it's back). I almost had to throw myself off a cliff to make it stop.

But I do love werewolf stories. So I read the summary, took a chance on it, and read it in one sitting. It is that good.

This is not the usual werewolf story. The werewolf is not a wolf only at the full moon. He was that already for most of his life before his wife and lover pulled something nasty on him. Gabriel became a wolf for the next t 2 years of his life, as they figure out a way to trap him in wolf form so they can marry and get all his wealth (he is a duke and the king's nephew after all). He is desperately lonely, since he's a human in a wolf's body, and he doesn't fit into either world. But then Kathryn, the magician (whose name I can't spell), and the king and queen (of I think some part of France in the 11th century) all team up to save him. And yeah, they all pretty much live happy ever after (No shock, because everyone knows how this story turns out). It's the getting there that's the problem.

What I found especially refreshing about this book was that all the main characters knew that the wolf was Gabriel by the first quarter of the book. They then spend the rest of the book saving him. No angst of the wolf fearing that the people he cares about find out - he's actually quite happy, because they treat him like a man and a knight instead of an animal. Come on, the heroine even tries to sleep on the stone floor of the castle so the injured wolf can have the bed (chivalrous times would never allow the man to share a bed with an unmarried woman, even if he wasn't human). Naturally he doesn't allow that. Even the peasants and serveants throw away their silly supersitions about werewolves. It's a win-win situation for everyone!Except for the villains. Totally lose-lose there.

It's short, it's sweet, and it can't be put down. Now some reviews said they wanted to choke the wife through the computer screen. Nuh uh, it's the new husband that you want to strangle. I even felt a little sorry for the wife at the end - because a curse comes back on the caster three-fold (you'll see). Don't worry, everyone in the book gets what's coming to them.

Read it. Read it twice. And then read it again in a couple of months. You will be a happy. I'm glad I took a chance on a theme I didn't like. Now if I could just get that stupid song out of my mind...

HIGHLY ACADEMIC, INTERESTING

This is an academic book about the accumulated scientific knowledge on the large Amazon catfishes. The book ranges from highly technical notes of how populations are surveyed to a list of all the different species in the region and their characteristics.

The very interesting fact is the migratory patterns of the different species along different rivers. The general pattern is to reproduce in headwaters, then they travel to the estuary region where they grow and then migrate back to headwaters to feed, grow more (ever larger, 200 pounds or more) and finally reproduce. The study reflects part of the concern over large hydroelectric dams that could interrupt this cycle.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in the finer aspects of Amazon conservation. Though academic, it is readable for the novice as well.

This is a fascinating read

This is a very slim book for the price, but it is packed with data and insight gained over years of research into the natural history of the large predatory catfish in the Amazon basin. This is frontier fisheries biology. Some of the discoveries revealed in this book say as much about the Amazon as it does about the fish themselves.
I would have preferred that they had eschewed the use of the local common names in favor of the scientific names as it can be confusing. For example when they refer to Sorubim, they don't mean Sorubim lima nor do they mean Sorubimichthys planiceps or even Hemisorubim platyrhynchus. They are referring to what American aquarists call the Tiger Shovelnose: Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum. There is a chapter covering the names and information about each fish to help out when such confusion arises. The chapter includes some great photographs of some of the largest specimens compared to the size of people, but it is unfortunate that all the photos are in black and white. It would have been particularly nice to have had color photos of the specimens of Merodontodus tigrinus and Brachyplatystoma juruense shown in the black and white photos.
One of the surprising revelations in this book is that while these catfish eat just about anything that moves, they seem to have a preference for Prochilodins. It seems that there are other very similar prey items (such as Leporinus spp.) that would serve just as well as Prochilodins.
This book would have been very helpful to me when I was majoring in fisheries biology and was primarily interested in aquaculture and viewing with disdain the put-and-take approach to fisheries required of the local government to maintain fishing sites for the "sportsmen". I'd have been much more interested in the wildlife aspect of the discipline if I'd had this book.
Overall this was an incredibly fascinating book for the little gems of knowledge that are revealed by the data that the authors collected.

Must have book for any architectural library.

Great book for a crash course in Architectural styles around the world. This book is direct to the point and is up to date with modern styles. This book is not like the typical huge and unmanageable books on architectural styles, this book is compact. This is a book you can take to a coffee shop and sit and read cover to cover, and feel like you have traveled through history and around the world and witnessed the evolution in architecture form and style.

This book presents both the art and science behind pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling. Using a building-block approach, the author starts from linear and nonlinear models at the individual level and proceeds to develop more complex linear and nonlinear mixed effects models at the population level, with particular emphasis on showing the interrelationships between the various model types. The theory behind the methods are illustrated using real data drawn from the literature and from the author’s own experiences in drug development. Data are analyzed using a variety of software, including SAS, WinNonlin, SAAM II, and NONMEM. A key component of the book is to show how models are accepted and rejected, ultimately leading to a useful and informative model that can be utilized using computer simulation to answer "what-if" questions.

This is a remarkable book - a single-author monograph covering a difficult and large field. Dr Bonate has the industry experience to write authoritatively about real problems in PK/PD modeling, and includes a few valuable examples that delve deeply into the problems that will be encountered in real projects. Overall, I recommend this to anyone willing to do the work to read it.
Complaints are minor, and feel a bit unfair to even mention. Firstly, the book could have used an editor. A few sections are a bit off-topic (for example, a tour of ECGs with misinformation about lead nomenclature, multiple typos and some grammatical errors/imprecision, use of abbreviations before they are defined (common with cut/paste during revision), and an absolutely dreadful index - typical of modern-day books in the technical medical arena - use the ToC to find things instead. Dr Bonate has a spectacular grasp of mathematics compared with this reviewer (an MD and physicist by background) - very few medical people will be able to keep up with the theoretical presentations. Statisticians will probably be ok with the assumed knowledge base, PK people perhaps... But he makes a good effort at helping guide the reader, if diligent, through arcana and traps alike, freely offering very valuable tips and rules of thumb of the sort that can only be gleaned by suffering through simulations and fittings. I would have appreciated a few more simple examples first, before delving into things like 'Generation of Weibull Random Variates', just to pull a (random) example - but for advanced practitioners, the deep-dives may be the most valuable aspect.
I personally found the book interesting enough to read it cover to cover, and appreciated the human touch in the Preface that captured some of the immense effort this must have been to complete. In summary, for anyone really serious about trying to understand and contribute to PK/PD analysis, this is an excellent book to own and consult frequently.

Book with a great chapter about modeling

I have been teaching modeling and simulation for several years. By itself, Chapter 1: "The Art of Modeling", is simply an excellent overview of the topic; and not only applies to pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling, but to modeling in general. It covers the usual suspects: what is a model, types of models, properties of a useful model, model development process, goodness-of-fit criteria and metrics, and model validation. Furthermore, gives a good introduction to subtle but important topics, such as: model discrimination criteria (AIC, F-test, etc.), identifiability of compartmental models, importance of effective communication and ethics in modeling. I have not gone through the details in all the other chapters, but given my good impression based in Chapter 1, I am sure that this textbook will become a must read to any serious modeler in the field of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic.

The author is well-known in the PK/PD modeling field. It is a reader-friendly book. It is very easy to understand. You would not be bored by the terminology. The author explained the theory and ideas by the simplest words. Actually, it is a very fun book. You are just like reading a story, not a boring science book.

This book is for students/professionals with adequate backgroup of PK/PD, math and statistics. It is especially useful for an entry level modeler or future modeler.
