Overall, great book for a beginning student

Positives:
-informative
-easy to understand
-great glossary in the back in case you don't understand a vocabulary word

Negatives:
-the outline of the chapters take awhile to get used to (they organize things by: anatomy, then problems, then the nursing process instead of by subject matter)
-sometimes they give way too much information on a topic so the chapters are really long and can get boring

Only because it was required....

Wordy, repetitive, unnecessarily complicated format for the content; the chapter itself doesn't really roll together smoothly, for most of them, especially in the beginning. Not to mention the publishers offer online study options like practice NCLEX questions and answers ebook, but it's only chapter 31. Why chapter 31, what the.... am I going to do with that except for one else small slice of this class? BTW this book has something like 2000 pages, it weighs 20+ lbs I can't carry it everywhere with me.... The website isn't reliable so don't count on being able to study when you want to or need do, it's like you have to check in every few hours and send a lot of emails to tech support who, thus far, have not been helpful.

Venerable Thubten Chodron has been a Buddhist nun since 1977 and has studied and practiced Buddhism under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tsenzhap Serkong Rinpoche, Lama Zopa Rinpoche and other Tibetan masters. She is the founder and abbess of Sravasti Abbey (sravasti.org), a Buddhist monastic community in Washington State, USA.

Bought for a friend who wanted an introduction to Dharma

I'm glad I did. The format is questions the the Abess. She answers in clear and straightforward style.
I intended to look through it before giving it to my friend and ended up reading almost the entire book.
There are many ways to be introduced to Tibetan Buddhism. This is a very satisfactory first book.

I would also recommend Thich Nhat Hanh, and of course H.H. The Dalai Lama. They both write with wisdom and clarity that are suitable for new students and seasoned meditators.
Many of my friends who read Dharma, not as a spiritual path, but to make sense out of the crazy times in which we live also receive benefit from Pema Chodron's books.

A good book, but not what I was looking for.

Buddhism for Beginners is a good book for those with questions about Buddhism, specifically a Tibetan form of Buddhism, unfortunately for me I was looking for a books on Zen Buddhism and didn't look closely enough at this book. Anyway, it really is a well written and thorough book it deserves 5 stars, it just wasn't what I was looking for.

This is a Westerner-friendly discussion of Buddhist beliefs and practices presented in a question-and-answer format. The 21 chapters cover Buddhist beliefs and scriptures, rituals, the role of women, modern social issues like abortion, and practical tips for raising children and dealing with non-Buddhist relatives. The author attempts to fairly represent a variety of Buddhist traditions in a positive light. As a non-Buddhist I found it to be occasionally jargon-y but probably about as clear and straightforward as a "believer" can present their own religion. I think this book would be especially helpful for people who have already decided to embrace Buddhism or who grew up in Buddhist homes but don't really understand the religion they wish to practice. The Kindle price is a few dollars cheaper than the print edition both on Amazon and in local bookstores, which is always nice to see!

started good but ended bad

I agree that the baptism of the spirit is required for true salvation but he went way off the reservation with reincarnation, and that another being beside God created man. it's hard to connect how the removed gospels/apocrypha provide a 'new' interpretation of Jesus words. Pretty twisted logic in many places. I thought this wild challenge my thinking but instead this turns out to be another cult manual....started good..ended bad.

At the minimum this book has allowed me to see the teaching of Jesus in a new perspective. The questions I've been running through my brain have answers. My heart is filled with joy knowing where to find the truth. The vail of darkness has been lifted. Thank you so much. Praise Jesus!

Falling into anti-semitism...

"By their fruits shall you know them..." Much of this is interesting and thoughtful, but it also fell into the same trap some gnosticism did, a rationale for hatred and anti-semitism that at one point in this book even collapses into a defense of the Holocaust. Excellent as an example of the pitfalls that surround the spiritual quest, very dangerous as a guide for the same.

Thorough scholarship and somewhat prescient

This is an extremely pertinent book for the next millenium. It is also quite popular in policy circles inside the Beltway. It is an indeispensible text for all Americans concerned with the future of international trade and the ongoing pathologies of our current trade regimes and the power relations they sustain to the detriment of the vast majority of human beings and the planet. It is thorough and scholarly throughout. While it is best read with a cup of Joe on a rainy day, it is worth the time and pays rereading many times over in light of current events. It's only shortcoming is it's neglect of the ecological dimensions of international trade and politics, nevertheless, it is a book for all who care about the human future.

or classical view of the enviornment, international relations,
economic policy, and strategy in such a comprehensive manner.

Gilpin shows his true scholarly intellect of those before him and
provides encouragement for those to follow.

An excellant work on political economics

Robert Gilpin's work is excellent addition to the study of political economics, albeit one that is starting to show its age 20 years after being written. This notwithstanding, the theoretical components of the book are mostly still valid and have been built upon by Gilpin in further works. As a matter of historical record and of economic history, it makes fascinating reading and it is especially interesting to consider the author's speculation as to the future of American hegemony prior to the fall of the Soviet Union. Obviously many of the authors fears were ill-founded, but it is interesting to note how different it could have all been. Additionally, many of the examples used, primarily dealing with the economic ascendancy of Japan, could today almost be replaced with China. It will be interesting to see whether this time it is the end of US hegemony or whether history will repeat itself.

Overall well worth the read.

About the Author
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), best known to the world by his pen-name Mark Twain, was an author and humorist, noted for his novels The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), which has been called "the Great American Novel", and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876, among many others.

Beverly Lyon Clark is Professor of English at Wheaton College. She is author of Kiddie Lit: The Cultural Construction of Children's Literature in America, Regendering the School Story: Sassy Sissies and Tattling Tomboys, Lewis Carroll, and Reflections of Fantasy: The Mirror-Worlds of Carroll, Nabokov, and Pynchon. Her edited volumes include the Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature, Louisa May Alcott: The Contemporary Reviews and Girls, Boys, Books, Toys: Gender in Children's Literature and Culture.
