This book does not have beginning nor end. John Grisham is an excellent writer of thriller books, and I thought this could be one of these . But not, it is the history of Samantha a young lawyer from New York who has to go to West Virginia, and became involved in a lot of confusing legal trials. That is it.

Outstanding Guidance for developing effective instruction

There are many guidelines for designing instruction. Most provide sound guidance but are based primarily on the experience of the authors or perhaps common practice in the field. Ten Steps is based on van Merrienboer's previous work on his 4C-ID model. This model is based on careful research on the instructional process. In a previous review of this model I suggested that his previous book is a classic in the field of instructional design. This new presentation of this model makes it more accessible to practitioners by providing step-by-step guidance to the application of the model. Following this approach will result in instruction that is effective, efficient and engaging. This approach encompasses the best of problem-centered learning with direct instruction. It is wonderful combination of the best that is known of our craft without being doctrinaire. I highly recommend this work to every instructional designer.

Finally, a clear approach to designing training for complex knowledge

There are many books available today that give advice about how to design training. Most of them are based on approaches that were developed in the mid 1970's and a majority of them are adequate for training that emphasizes relatively simple skills. This book is based on our most current knowledge about how to support complex learning and the transfer of knowledge beyond training to work. The authors, Jeroen vanMerrienboer and Paul Kirschner are both internationally recognized university faculty who have extensive experience in business and government training. They define complex learning as involving "the integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes, the coordination of qualitatively different constituent skills and the transfer of what is learned in school or training to daily life and work settings". The ten step approach they describe is currently being used to train people who perform highly complex jobs in both North America and Europe. It has also been used by people who are developing courses for schools and universities. The training that results from their design system can be presented by instructors in classroom settings or by the latest multi-media technology. Each of the ten steps they describe is supported both by applications in a variety of settings and solid research on learning and transfer. The book focuses on describing when each of the ten steps is necessary or useful and how to implement steps. Text boxes on pages describe the research support for key aspects of each step.

In my view, this book presents a very comprehensive approach that is based on both "best practice" and "solid research". It represents the most current "state of the art and science" of learning, training and transfer and it is well worth the investment for anyone involved in instruction, corporate training or the management of training systems.

I love this story and have read it multiple times

I love this story and have read it multiple times. Certainly one of the best survival stories out there. I originally saw and purchased the movie which could only have been better if it was in Imax as the photography is absolutely breath taking. The book certainly has some more detail however I think having seen the movie helps a bit with visualizing the extreme conditions these guys were in. There is a scene in the movie that starts as an incredible panoramic view of the mountain range and the camera slowly pans in to the point where you see these two specs climbing the shear face of the mountain. For me that scene really puts the whole story into perspective. There were no margins for error here and then how these two dealt with it and their emotions when the worst occurs. I highly recommend this one

Reaching Beyond One's Limit

I climbed, I clawed, I hung on for dear life through the entire book. This true story of two men climbing in the mountains of Peru had me figuratively climbing with them. This well written book describes what goes on in a climbers mine and the physical toll one experiences while knowing death is possible at any moment. The range of a climber's emotions are extreme. One can be joyful over the smallest detail like a sip of warm tea in the morning or an ice pick that never leaves your hand. The terror of what can happen in the blink of an eye (it happens) and the knowledge of an experienced climber of what to expect now begs the question; is it worth it to go on? An inner voice constantly prodded Joe Simpson forward despite the hopelessness that lay before him. My fingers got cold just reading it.
We all have a built in desire for survival; some more some less. I believe my desire to live, to survive, to just keep going, grew from experiencing this book.

A modern classic of survival, told with unusual grace and style

A classic survival story, on a par with Piers Paul Read's "Alive", Alfred Lansing's "Endurance", or any other great one cares to mention.

When Joe Simpson and fellow climber Simon Yates set off to conquer a remote Peruvian peak, they have no idea that they'll not only achieve a first ascent of the mountain's most difficult face, but also pull off one of the most unbelievable rescue/survival epics ever. Without sentimentality but with a near-poetic insight, Simpson takes the reader through his ordeal and Yates's counter-narrative; this book will leave you gasping at its intensity, and also applauding the singular will that takes one man through an ordeal he shouldn't have survived--but did. Simpson has gone on to write other books about climbing, and all of them are as read-worthy as "Touching the Void." But I'd start with "Void"; it's a great introduction to Simpson and his unique, compelling prose.

how does it feel to be coloured me

This is a collection of work from the novelist Zora Neale Hurston. It contains fourteen remarkable selections from a writer who produced novels, essays and letters from 1920 - 1950. It is an anthology of works that provides a wonderful insight into American social and cultural history as well as offering an incredible mental picture of the woman - Hurston. The book is edited by Alice Walker.In 2007 the Guardian newspaper asked women to recommend a book that had made an impact on them as women. Zadie Smith wrote passionately about Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and how, having read this book, her life and writing had been enriched.

I feel at last here was recognition for a black woman writer who Alice Walker describes as "a woman ahead of her time

The book is an extraordinary journey through the title. Hurston writes about black American `folk art' that is questioning and without apology. In the words of Alice Walker "the language of the characters, that `dialect' that has been laughed at, denied or ignored, or `improved' so that white folks ......can understand it is simply beautiful".

Hurston's writing is mean and impressive and she challenges the reader to think and go back and think again - about the meaning of her words. You find yourself asking: is she challenging the `politics' of the day in Crazy for This Democracy, or is she an artist of words, challenging assumptions about ethnicity and culture in What White Publishers Won't Print?

I have dipped into this book over the years and never cease to be amazed and thankful for a language that is rich in meaning and colour, never dull and always inspirational and always able to provide a quote or a text that has meaning for today's readers. I do not think this anthology is now in print. However, other works of Hurston are and readers are to be encouraged to go and seek them out.

This is what Hurston had to say about herself, "I couldn't see it for wearing it. It was only when I was off in college, away from my native surroundings, that I could see myself like somebody else and stand off and look at my garment".

Again she captured the art of critical reflection in a way that I couldn't.

My Favorite Writers

I am a zealous fan of both Zora Neale Hurston and Alice Walker, and have been for over 35 years. Love the title. Love their writing and the depth, reality they explore.

Zora Hurston

Zora Neal Hurston is one of the great American writers - she actually studies anthropology and gives an accurate portrayal of life of Black folks in the south after WWI. Some critics do not like her use of dialect, but I think it reads as honest.

Duncan Clinch Heyward (1864-1943) served as governor of South Carolina from 1903 to 1907.

He is the author of numerous works in U.S. and international economic history, including The Shadow of a Dream: Economic Life and Death in the South Carolina Low Country, 1670-1920 and The South, the Nation, and the World: Perspectives on Southern Economic Development (with David L. Carlton).

Good overview of SC rice culture and plantation life

Very interesting read, should be read by anyone interested in rice culture in SC, plantation life, life of freed slaves after War of Northern Aggression, Charleston SC, SC plantations. Forward should be re read after reading the book as it does not make a lot of sense until after read.
