About the Author
Jean McNiff is Professor of Educational Research at York St John University, UK. She is also a Visiting Professor at UiT the Arctic University of Norway, and at the Beijing Normal University and Ningxia Teachers University, People s Republic of China.

Jean took early retirement from her position as deputy head teacher of a large secondary school in Dorset, UK. She went into business for herself, and developed her writing. Her textbooks on action research and professional education are now used internationally on workplace-based professional education courses and on higher degree courses. Jean provides interdisciplinary consultancy work to institutions around the world where she gives lectures and conducts workshops on planning, doing and writing action research.

Jean aims to contribute to personal and social betterment through educational research. She encourages everyone to make their stories public in the form of their personal and collaborative theories of practice; and she firmly believes that each individual is able to contribute to social and planetary wellbeing by explaining how they hold themselves accountable for what they do. In this way she links education with moral accountability. She tries to bring the university to everyday contexts, and everyday contexts into the university, for it is only by involving everyone, she feels, that the world will become a better place for us all.

Bloom County: The Beginning

Here you will find the beginning of one of the most inspired comic strips ever put to paper. No other strip made me laugh as hard, or as often, as "Bloom County". In fact, pretty much nothing else in the whole wide world made me laugh as hard as this divine creation of Mr. Berke Breathed. Here we are introduced to the Milo Bloom, Steve Dallas, Cutter John and by far the best-known comic Penguin ever - Opus.
Here we can see that Bloom County was just crackling with creativity and a real desire to "cut loose" from the beginning. Some of the strips covered "current events" and were topical, meaning circa 1980, but if you were around for any of that time it's a nostalgic trip back to the days of Boy George and when Ozzy Osbourne was best known as a singer. But the vast majority of the strips ring very true today as they deal with the absurdities of the human animal.
A word about the format: Bloom County in it's original form included both the standard "3 panel" strips that appear in your every day newspaper in black and white, plus a larger full page color version for the Sunday paper. The other Bloom County volumes (as well as Bloom's sequel "Outland") were in a larger physical book form. (Similar to what you may have seen if you're a collector of, say, Calvin and Hobbes, or Dilbert). This first volume is a smaller book (similar in format to the endless volumes of Garfield which became available). But this is where it all began, and it includes much of the "best stuff".
If you want to know what America was laughing at in 1980, this is it. But you know what? I reread these strips every so often, and they STILL make me laugh that loud, roll on the floor, tears streaming down my face, people coming into the room to see WHAT are you laughing at kind of laugh. We don't get that kind of laugh often enough. Thank you, Mr. Breathed.

Berke Breathed's Glory Days!

Bloom County had something special, more than just the jokes. As you read the strip, you cannot help but get involved with the characters.
Bloom County fans don't just laugh at the jokes, they care about Opus and the rest. Even Steve Dallas, the ruthless but inept lawyer, wins sympathy.
The humour tends to the wit and satire end of the cartoon spectrum with only occasional bursts of slapstick. The satire is aimed mainly at lifestyles and steroetypes rather than current events which makes it still sharp as it ages.
It is a very male-centric book. Female characters are introduced in order to give the main players a romantic interlude or to prop up some situation.
Bloom County was one of the best cartoons of its time and Loose Tails is a real gem.

The first collection of a great comic strip - great fun

This is the first collection of Bloom County cartoons and a great place to start enjoying the fun. Bloom County is a fictional place populated with as eclectic a group of characters as you will find anywhere. Eccentric humans, a talking penguin, and Bill the Cat take on the societal follies of the early eighties with a humorous point of view.
See the Rolling Stones perform for an elementary school dance. Go back to a time when Three Mile Island was in the news and Princess Diana was expecting her first child. Even if the events are distant memories, the humor is timeless.

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Great book for medical epidemiology!

I bought this book because I had no training in statistics and was feeling frustrated by having to memorize meaningless things for exams. I mean, that the short term memorization of sensitivity/specificity, prevalence, odds rations, these kinds of things was hard for me and then I would forget what they meant immediately after the exam.

That is not the best way to learn medical stats. So, in despair I looked for a good book to actually learn what is behind the short-hand notation I had been learning. This book actually teaches what it all means! The author is also pretty friendly and funny and I found that his humor was really helpful for absorbing the points he was making. He took the basic information and expanded it, so that now I really do understand the different studies and how to interpret their results. Well, I am no expert but at least I have a decent working knowledge of what is behind a research article. Good book, and it explains things very well.

I've used this book numerous times while I was pursuing my Doctorate degree. It is very concise and helpful for evaluating medical literature and clinical studies. There are many great examples of poor studies of which you should be critical.

Very Beneficial Book!

I purchased this book for my Literature Evaluation course in grad school and it has proved to be extremely helpful and beneficial. I've talked to some of the upperclassmen who purchased the book last year and they still use it on rotations and for journal clubs. From my understanding, none of the upperclassmen were willing to sell their books because they felt it was such a valuable resource for them. If you spend time actually trying to understand the material in the book, it will be of great benefit to you. One of the great things about it is the use of an abundant amount of examples from studies and trials to outline the points made by the authors. This really helps facilitate better understanding of the concepts presented. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning how to critically evaluate studies and trials for the purposes of topic discussion, case presentations, or journal clubs.
