Nishida has written extensively on philosophy and his complete works fill twelve volumes. The present work consists of trans lations of three of his studies that all belong to a comparatively late phase in his development. Nishida has said of himself: I have always been a miner of ore; I have never managed to refine it. The absence of a last systematic refinement may indeed be felt by the reader of the present selection. Still, the reader may be impressed by the strangely new experience of life here encountered, whether his heart is moved or his mind is made to think. Nishida uses Western concepts to express his philosophical re ection. The reader may not always perceive this, however, since Nishida's basic experience, with Zen at its center, cannot properly be formulated in Western terms and needs the structure of a new philosophical theory. The approach to his thought is, therefore, not easy. Yet we are convinced that Nishida's philosophy can open a new way towards the mutual understanding of East and West. In the hope of contributing to this mutual comprehension, upon which a new philosophy of mankind can be erected, we venture to offer the present publication to Western readers.

Important work for anyone interested in Nishida

This apparently is a difficult book to get a hold of these days. That is a shame because it is a very important book for anyone interested in Nishida's philosophy. There are only two books by Nishida that are still in print: An Inquiry into the Good, his first book, and Last Writings: Nothingness and the Religious Worldview, his last book. His thought underwent a tremendous development between those two books and in my opinion this book is the necessary connecting link between the two works still in print.

In the first essay of this book Nishida lays out his logic of basho beginning with the Universal of judgment and culminating in the Universal of absolute nothingness. In the last essay of this book Nishida explains his theory of absolute contradictory identity. Both of these notions are central to Nishida's philosophy as a whole. This book is absolutely essential for understanding Nishida, and I therefore recommend that anyone with an interest in Nishida's philosophy do whatever they can to get a hold of a copy.

Nishida's philosophy is brilliant and deeply relevant to current issues and debates. Nishida's philosophy could fruitfully be brought into dialogue with any major Western philosopher on just about any topic. There is so much of continuing relevance in Nishida's philosophy, no matter what topic you are studying in philosophy Nishida's philosophy will have something interesting and profound to say. Nishida's philosophy deserves far more attention than it gets in the West, and it is my genuine hope that that will change, and if it does perhaps some of these books will come back in print, and maybe even some new translations will be made!

Addendum: it seems my wish has been granted! Two new translations of Nishida Kitaro have been made. One of them is already available Place and Dialectic: Two Essays by Nishida Kitaro (Aar Religions in Translation). The other is not available yet but is on the way Ontology of Production: Three Essays (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society). I have not had a chance to read either yet but the fact that new translations are being made is a very good sign. Nishida's time is coming!

It works!

I have a very poor communication skills. And although I know I have lots of wonderful ideas to share, I cannot simply get my ideas across. Due to this, my people skills dropped. Many times it jeopardized my position at work and had several conflicts with my subordinates. This book came to me at the most perfect time. Many thanks for saving my job (and relationships as well)! Now I find myself being an engaging conversationalist and an effective communicator! I sooo like it! Great job to the author!

Great Book a must read it gives you both perspectives on the employee's side and the bosses side. Employees are not always wrong and bosses are not always right.

I wish i had read this book in My younger years would have helped me in a few situations. Gave me great ideas for my personal objectives with my career goals.

Very Misleading

I bought this book because I am doing some research on the history of intelligence testing and the description stated the book covers that history in depth. In actuality, there are a few brief chapters in the history of intelligence with the remaining two-thirds of the book being about an IQ test the authors designed for a television show. No where in the description did it mention this and it is the bulk of book! Some may find their little experiment interesting, but I am severely disappointed that I bought a book claiming to be about the history of intelligence testing and instead I got a run-down of some reality TV show. Wish I hadn't underlined a few things in the very beginning or I'd return it to get my money back. I suggest changing the description of this book to be a more accurate reflection of its contents.

A generic and inaccurate coverage of the ELK stack

The Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana trinity, usually referred to as the ELK stack, is by far, the de facto standard in log centralization and analysis. Despite being such a popular solution, with some half a million downloads per month, the titles available to the stack or specific to its components are still very limited. This is partially compensated by the official documentation, which is both friendly and easy to follow and allows anyone to quickly get started. Learning ELK Stack is the only title available, until now, that covers the three products at once. It targets beginners who are interested in an overall view of the stack and its components.

Released at the end of 2015, Learning ELK Stack is a short book spanning around 200 pages. As any typical beginner's title, it does start with an introductory chapter that gets the reader through the installation process. What follows is a series of chapters where the author first shows the power of the stack and then dives deeper into its components.

The very first chapter already reveals problems that are present throughout the whole book. It is very superficial and does not really get a beginner started. First of all, the stack does require Oracle's JDK installed and configured. This is completely overlooked. Now while someone might argue that it is pretty straightforward through a package manager, the reader can still be using a distro whose package manager installs a version of the JDK that is not suitable for the ELK stack. Likewise, the whole stack can be installed through simple apt commands. The author does cover installation through .tar.gz archives, completley overlooking installing and configuring Java from the source and the default Java (yea, you can have multiple at the same time). Which is not that straightforward.

Installation apart, nothing is said about the configuration of the three softwares neither as a standalone nor as a stack. Well, this is not properly correct. The astonishing amount of twelve lines is dedicated to this in fact. After an overall overview of the stack, with an example built using data from Yahoo—you ain't limited to use the stack to process logs, the authors focuses on the components, each at a time. These chapters feel like a reference. Each option is listed, but the examples do not go beyond the two lines. Interestingly, by googling sentences from the book, we find a 70% match analysis with the official documentation (Harvard refers to this as mosaic plagiarism), suggesting a copy/paste with a couple of words added/removed.

As an example, this is what we find in Learning ELK stack:
The mutate filter is an important filter plugin that helps rename, remove, replace, and modify fields in an incoming event.

And this is the information we freely find in the official documentation provided by Elastic:
The mutate filter allows you to perform general mutations on fields. You can rename, remove, replace, and modify fields in your events.

Tying it all up, I do not really recommend this book ,despite being the only title covering the stack as a whole. The documentation the reader will find is first of all inaccurate. Anything else can be found for free in the official documentation.

I have tried to contact Packt Publishing asking what is their position on that matter. I did not get any real answer apart from a semi-automatic one.

Just over a month ago, I purchased a copy of Learning ELK stack and is a good book for those wanting a quick ramp up of what ELK is, This is a good step-by-step guide for Elastic Search, Logstash and Kibana. this book its well written and gives an honest account, i would highly recommend this as a first book read to anyone wanting to know about ELK.

Typical "For Dummies" Perfection

This book covers it all and leaves no stone unturned, which is typical of any "For Dummies" book. Keep in mind this book is about the planning, building, functions, and construction of beehives. This book is NOT about beekeeping in general, as the title should tell you, but still--take note!

If you are a beekeeper who would like to learn how to build your own hives, or if you are a carpenter or craftsperson who'd like to make money making hives for beekeepers, then this is an excellent resource for you. We haven't been keeping bees for too long, but we've learned that the hives and equipment can add up! We frequently search Craigslist and other sources for handmade hives and accessories. Anyone learning to build beehives should enjoy their profits, as beekeeping is a growing hobby and many beekeepers are in need.

Or, if you'd simply like to build one or two hives for yourself, this is still a valuable resource. The book covers several styles of hives for construction, such as the Langstroth and a top bar hive and an observation hive. There are probably many creative hives out there to be discovered, this book covers several of the more common.

The diagrams and images are clear and helpful in understanding hive construction and function. The book also covers many common hive accessories and how to construct them, such as top feeders, hive stands, solar wax melters (that one is new to us!), and frames. Like I said, no stone has been left unturned. If you are interested in hive construction, look no further.

This is probably the 2nd book I'd say is a must have for beekeepers, the first being The Beekeeper's Bible, which has been our favorite resource. For a beekeeper, even if you're not going to end up building a hive, I think you can learn a few things from this book. It's worth checking out!
