In this fascinating book, anthropologist Dr. David Givens explains how body language and other silent signals and cues work in the different phases of courtship. Along the way, he explains what the various signals mean, and where they came from. He doesn’t just look at gestures, but also at such things as colors, clothing, aromas and much more.

Overall, I found this to be a very fascinating book. Dr. Givens has produced the premier book on how to be successful at the game of human courtship, which applies to those who want to meet someone new and to those who want to maintain their bond with their spouse. I highly recommend this book!

If you want an eye-opener, this was it!

This book was facinating. It provides real insight into the human art of courting and mating and how we use our five senses in that pursuit! I was able to take the ideas from the book and apply them in life. I cued into many things we do between the sexes. I think all single people should read this. It's fun and it's well written.

THE SECOND PART OF ONE OF KIERKEGAARD'S MOST FAMOUS WORKS

Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author, who was the first existentialist philosopher. He wrote many other books, including Philosophical Fragments, Fear & Trembling; The Sickness Unto Death, Concluding Unscientific Postscript, Attack upon Christendom,
The Concept of Irony, The Concept of Dread, Christian Discourses, Training in Christianity, The Point of View for My Work as an Author: A Report to History, etc.

The companion volume to this is Either/Or.

Writing as “Victor Eremita” [Kierkegaard wrote the entire book, but pretended that it was the work of two different authors whose papers he had come into possession of], this second volume purports to be written by a civil judge, who attempts to counsel the young author of Volume I.

He states, “You find it aesthetically beautiful that a child is born with pain, and it is a mark of respect for a human being, a symbolic indication of the significance of the fact that a man comes into the world , in contrast to the beasts which, the lower they are in the scale, the more easily they bring forth their young. I may here again lay emphasis upon the consideration that this is proclaimed as the universal lot of mankind; and the statement that a child is born in sin is the profoundest expression for its highest dignity. It is a glorification of human life that all that pertains to it is referred to the category of sin.” (Pg. 93)

He advises the “second author”: “What I have so often said to you, I say now once again, or rather I shout it: Either/or, aut/aut. For a single aut adjoined as a rectification does not make the situation clear, since the question here at issue is so important that one cannot rest satisfied with a part of it, and in itself it is too coherent to be possessed partially. There are situations in life where it would be ridiculous or a species of madness to apply an either/or; but also, there are men whose souls are too dissolute… to grasp what is implied in such a dilemma, whose personalities lack the energy to say with pathos, Either/or.” (Pg. 161)

He says, “oppositions must first be in existence before I can mediate them. But if the oppositions are there, then there must be an either/or. The philosopher says, ‘That’s the way it’s been hitherto.’ I ask, ‘What am I do to if I do not want to be a philosopher?’ For if I want to be that, I see clearly enough that I, like the other philosophers, shall soon get to the point of mediating the past…. If I were the most gifted philosophical mind that has ever lived in the world, there must be one thing more I have to do besides sitting and contemplating the past… for philosophy mediates the past and has its existence in it, the philosopher hastens back into the past to such a degree that, as a poet says of an antiquarian, ‘only his coat tails are left behind in the present.’ At this point you are united with the philosophers. What unites you is that life comes to a stop. ” (Pg. 174)

He points out, “But he who says that he wants to enjoy life always posits a condition which either lies outside the individual or is in the individual in such a way that it is not posited by the individual himself.” (Pg. 184) He suggests, “Doubt and despair … belong in entirely different spheres, different sides of the soul are set in motion… Despair is a far deeper and more complete expression, its movement much more comprehensive than that of doubt. Despair is precisely an expression for the whole personality, doubt only an expression for thought… One cannot despair at all without willing it, but to despair truly one must truly will it.” (Pg. 216-217)

He counsels, “So, then I bid you despair, and never more will your frivolity cause you to wander like an unquiet spirit, like a ghost, amid the ruins of a world which to you is lost. Despair, and never more will your spirit sigh in melancholy, for again the world will become beautiful to you and joyful, although you will see it with different eyes than before, and your liberated spirit will soar up into the world of freedom.” (Pg. 223)

He explains, “I use the expression that I ‘repent myself out of the whole of existence.’ For repentance is the expression for the fact that evil belongs to me necessarily, and at the same time the expression for the fact that it does not necessarily belong to me. If the evil in me did not belong to me essentially, I could not choose absolutely, I would not be able to choose myself absolutely at all, so I would not myself be the absolute but only product.” (Pg. 229)

But he goes on, “But he who has not infinitely chosen himself---can he say, ‘Now I possess myself, I require nothing more, and to all the changes of the world I oppose the proud thought: I am the man I am’? By no manner of means!... The fundamental error would… lie in the fact that in the strictest sense he had not chosen himself. He had chosen himself maybe, but outside himself… When the individual has grasped himself in his eternal validity this overwhelms him by its fullness. The temporal vanishes from before his eyes.” (Pg. 235)

He asserts, “He who chooses himself ethically has himself as his task, and not as possibility merely, not as a toy to be played with arbitrarily. He can choose himself ethically only when he chooses himself in continuity, and so he has himself as a task which is manifoldly defined…. But when repentantly he chooses himself he is active, not in the direction of isolation but in the direction of continuity.” (Pg. 262)

He concludes, “‘…as against God we are always in the wrong.’ Being in the wrong---can any feeling be thought of more painful than this?... it is edifying to be in the wrong… to wish to be in the wrong is the expression for an infinite relationship; to wish to be in the right or to find it painful to be in the wrong is the expression for a finite relationship! So, then, it is edifying always to be in the wrong, for only the infinite edifies, not the finite!” (Pg. 348, 350)

About the Author
Dr. Elgammal is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey since Fall 2002. Dr. Elgammal is also a member of the Center for Computational Biomedicine Imaging and Modeling (CBIM). His primary research interest is computer vision and machine learning. His research focus includes human activity recognition, human motion analysis, tracking, human identification, and statistical methods for computer vision. Dr. Elgammal received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2006. He has been the principal investigator and co-principal investigator of several research projects in the areas of human motion analysis, gait analysis, tracking, facial expression analysis and scene modeling; funded by NSF and ONR. Dr. Elgammal is a member of the review committee/board in several of the top conferences and journals in the computer vision field and is a senior IEEE member. Dr. Elgammal received his Ph.D. in 2002 and M.Sc. degree in 2000 in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Elgammal received M.Sc. and B.E. degrees in computer science and automatic control from Alexandria University in 1996 and 1993, respectively.

Short, sweet, and funny. I loved "The Bible in a Nutshell" so much that I had to read another book by Casper. I needed some good humor today and my needs were met. I wish my friends who still believe in imaginary friends would read some books written by atheists, but of course they can't because they fear that the devil would get them just like he got me. Seriously that is their reason for refusing to read anything written by a known atheist. I will have to ask them now if they think I eat babies because after all...potatoes.

The science of sleep, and how you can put it to use to be more well rested

This book is a two-in-one. It’s a pop sci book covering the science of sleep. However, it’s arranged as a self-help guide to teach one how to get the most from one’s sleep life. It covers a wide range of sleep related issues from how to minimize jet lag to how to master lucid dreaming. It also describes the sometimes dire effects of not getting enough quality sleep. Along the way one also learns about interesting anecdotes and research that may not change your quality of sleep, but could prove interesting or useful nonetheless—such as the research that shows a strong correlation between the position in which one usually sleeps and one’s personality.

The meat of the book is divided up into eight sections (called “Lessons” in accord with the theme of “Night School.”) The first few lessons begin with general background on sleep and sleep deprivation, and cover how much sleep one needs and how one can achieve the best possible sleep life. Then the book delves into more specialized topics such as night terrors, sleepwalking, “power napping,” and the question of whether one can really learn in one’s sleep. The last couple chapters deal with dreaming (normal and lucid.)

Along with the eight lessons, there are also eight assignments. Most of these assignments are surveys that help the reader understand what will work for them best specifically—as not all sleep advice is one-size-fits-all. However, there are other assignments like a mid-course recap exam, a call to attempt interpreting one’s own dreams (as opposed to relying on the generic dream interpretation guides which the science suggests are bunk,) and a suggestion to start a dream diary—with instructions for how to go about it.

Another nice feature of the book are its boxed discussions of relevant research on such topics as segmented sleep (instead of sleeping through the night), narcolepsy, snoring, children’s sleep issues, etc. There’s also a Conclusion that reviews key information from the book in the form of a refutation of the common myths that abound on the subject of sleep, as well as a “manifesto” that repeats key elements of advice on good sleep. It’s a scholarly work, and so it include source citations.

I learned a lot from this book. Granted a lot of the advice is commonsense (e.g. sleep in a dark, cool, and quiet place), but there are plenty of not so obvious tid-bits as well (e.g. red light is okay, but blue light will keep one from sleeping.) There are also a lot of fascinating stories in the book to keep one interested.

I’d recommend the book for anyone who wants to learn to improve their sleep lives.

I came across this book by accident, on youtube.
But I am happy I did!

I love any neuroscience type book and you can't more into brains than sleep.

But it is an easy read and full of information.
I appreciate it because I work graveyards and need every bit of info.

Printable questionnaire's?

Having bought the book and just started reading it, it seems to be well written and clear, the issue that I have encountered is that there are many questionnaires in the book and obviously on the kindle edition there is no way of marking one's responses. I am not sure if there is a companion website where one could download the questionnaire portions, print them out and mark them up as this would really increase the utility of the book since this is positioned as a practical guide and the participation of the reader is crucial to understanding the concepts in 'Night School'.

If such a site or resource exists would be great to have a link to that on the purchase page or in the item description, as otherwise the usefulness of the book is diminished greatly!
