The best soft-skills book I have ever read in recent years!
By T.N.
Having worked several years as a Human Resource Generalist, I attended, as well as conducted, many work place soft skill training-classes and consider myself quite knowledgeable with these skills.
I have also read quite a few books on the same topic. Generally, I viewed these books with a grain of salt. They tend to cover similar banal material of little practical use. Consequently, I have dismissed books of this genre. That is until I encountered "Fast-Tracking Your Career: Soft Skills for Engineering and IT Professionals."
After reading a few pages, I realized that the reason I did not regard career development books particularly helpful was because I had not come across a really good one. This book by Dr. Chou opened up my mind and kept me intrigued. Once I started, I could not put it down. When I was done, I was so excited that I rushed to wake my napping husband with "you must read this book!"
The book is short and easy to read, but contains a trove of career advancement skills. I am an impatient person who does not like to read thick books. This book is concise, with only some 160 pages. You can easily finish it within a few days by reading a little every day. I finished it in one weekend.
While this book is short, it is packed with a lot of examples. What distinguishes it from other books with similar titles is that it supports and illustrates every argument it makes with real work place examples, over 150 of them. These examples remind me of my previous work experience in the corporate world. For example, the book talks about someone using job offers from other companies to get a raise. It reminded me of a former colleague. Had that colleague read this book first, he would not have been dismissed in the end.
Listing a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of workplace soft skills: communication smart, people smart, marketing smart, work smart, time smart, career smart, job-interview smart, boss smart, motivation smart, delegation smart, thinking outside the box, etc...are terms we are not unfamiliar with, but the specific analysis and explanation given in the book afforded me a refreshing new perspective. Some of them I knew but did not understand as well as I thought I did, some I knew very little of, and some I simply got all wrong.
As mentioned, I conducted many staff training sessions as a human resource manager. Although I was well prepared in advance, I now realize that my understanding of some of these skills was inadequate. Had this book been published a few years earlier, I believe I could have conducted these training sessions even more effectively. In addition, the job-interviewing techniques as described left me, a well-honed HR professional, with nothing but admiration. Every example cited in the book reminded me of someone whom I had interviewed. I am totally in agreement with the author's perception and conclusion. I am in awe.
Personally, this book has helped me correct many common misconceptions. For example, articulate, eloquent speaking does not mean good communication skills and effective networking does not depend on the number of people you know. In the company I once worked, there was a young, articulate salesman with a master's degree, who knew a large number of people. His sales performance, however, was far worse than that of his colleagues with only a secondary education and smaller personal networks. In talking about job-hopping, my own career track confirms the author's point of view.
Many of my friends are IT professionals or bio-medical engineers. Often I hear them complain about inadequate salaries, inept bosses, non-productive colleagues, limited career opportunities, etc. They just complain, but do not know how to solve these problems. I am convinced that this book can help them to move forward in their career.
This book is a must read for any IT and engineering professionals. But its usefulness is equally applicable to other professionals. Although my background is in liberal arts, this book can help me a great deal. Regardless of what profession you're in, I believe you can benefit from this book.

A realistic set of rules to prepare you to accelerate career
By Frank E Ferrante
Bill Chou's book is truly an outstanding, easy to read, and comprehensive study of the pluses and minuses he and others have experienced during their careers. He analytically relates success or lack of success to a basic set of soft skills being applied or not applied. Based on these real-world career-related experiences, Chou compiles soft skill guidelines and developed tables that allow a reader to understand where they can enhance their potential for success by simply knowing where the pitfalls are and how they can be avoided by properly applying a specific soft skill or a combination of skills.
Chou's categorization of soft skills and his tables and examples, linked with his finding that these skills are not all independent of each other and are stronger when combined in some instances, makes this book unique. Just the fact that this book provides me with a tool to evaluate past actions, so that mistakes I made can be corrected, will help me or anyone to be more successful in the future. That alone is worth learning from Chou's book if you are not moving upward as fast as you would like.
For all of those reasons I found this book unique relative to other books on career considerations. Books such as how to write successful resumes, how to prepare for an interview; how and when is it possible to ask for a raise or promotion, and more, are excellent on their own but Chou's book provides one with a measure that informs you of what is best to focus on given the situation. You do not generally find this in any of the other books on this topic and for that reason I highly recommend this book for reading front to back

Highly recommend it to anyone who is either starting a career or feels like they can do more to advance their current careers.
By Shungwu Lee
Bill Chou has written an excellent book that highlights a vital skillset for for professionals to advance in their careers, particularly the technological ones. He defines a set of social and interactive behaviors he calls “Soft Skills,” which he contrasts with professional acumen “Hard Skills”. The author asserts that having both hard and soft skills are essential to career advancement, just one or the other leads to caricatures such as the manager with no understanding of the work he manages or the Prima Donna engineer who is greatly talented but widely unpopular.
One of the strongest points of Fast-Tracking Your Career is the plethora of examples for each skill that put them in context. The examples include both positive application of each skill and examples of the pitfalls that can be encountered. The layout of the book is well done and easy to navigate when combined with a full index and appendix of summary tables in the back. Bill Chou also takes his own advice and keeps each chapter both concise and easy to understand.
Traditional education and training that emphasize hard technical skills have a tendency to leave out the soft skills outlined in this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is either starting a career or feels like they can do more to advance their current careers.
