For facilitators of all experience levels

This is a fantastic group book. While it has enough ideas in it to complement an experienced facilitator's toolbox, it can also be used for a less experienced/confident facilitator to rely upon more heavily. I am using the term "facilitator" as opposed to "clinician" because I think it is fine for victim advocates who have experience with trauma work without much or any clinical practice education, as long as they are in a supportive work environment. I think a clinician could gear it toward group therapy, while a victim advocate could gear it toward support group. My group leader loves this book, and so do the women (ages 23-68; survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and childhood trauma) in the group.

Best women's trauma treatment

Highly recommend to all therapists working with female trauma victims. This is the best, most non threatening and gender affirming trauma treatment program I have come across. There is a 2 day training seminar that you should take but I think you can figure out how to present this program w/o the training if it's unavailable in your area. The program runs for several weeks but it is simple, effective and powerful.

I am doing this as a Toastmaster's Advanced Speech. I am abridging it down to 15 minutes. Representative of some good, maybe not the best, Eugene O'Neill. Short and only 2 characters. Perfect for my requirements.

Illusion in humanity

A unique format for a one-act play, Eugene O'Neill's Hughie reads more like a short story than a play because of the very lengthy monologues. There are two characters, Erie, a 40ish year old man, small town gambler, lonely soul, boaster, and a run down hotel clerk who merely listens without listening.

The setting is New York, between 3-4 a.m. in midtown New York, a deteriorating hotel built by 1910. The night clerk is new to the job, and focuses on the sounds of the streeets, the city. He encounters Erie Smith, a small town gambler and known to the night clerk as 492. Erie Smith comes back the the hotel and spends the evening discussing Hughie, the previous night clerk who died recently.

We learn all about Hughie through Erie. Hughie was a family man, with children, he was trusting, and led a simple life. Erie was a bragger, an illusionist, low down gambler who has it one day and gone the next. Erie's life is a stark comparison to Hughie's. Erie's keeps letting the night clerk know what a sucker Hughie was, believe anything, a sap, poor.

The reader learns how Hughie's character was important to Erie's ego, confidence. The story hooks the reader in from beginning to end. This was not one of the most popular plays, but very impressive in its format.

Eugene O'Neill died in 1953 and was an honored man with three Pulitzer Prizes for Drama and the Nobel Prize for Literature. This lengthy play, written in late 40s was performed in mid 60s. Jason Robards performed the role as Erie Smith in 1964.

Portrait of a self-absorbed, semi-inebriated know-it-all

If you've ever been stuck in a room, late at night, with a rambling, self-absorbed, semi-inebriated know-it-all, then you'll recognize Erie, the character who dominates O'Neill's last one-act play. Erie Smith is the "type of small fry gambler and horse player" who imagines he is one of the "cynical oracles of the One True Grapevine." His demeanor alternates between pathos and superciliousness; he can be either endearing or annoying depending on the mood and the listener--but either version is hard to take in large doses.

After a night out on the town, Erie finds an unwilling listener in the hotel's night clerk, Charles Hughes, who has replaced the recently deceased Hughie (who, the audience imagines, probably dreaded Erie's late-night arrivals as well). What follows is an extended monologue of Erie's down-and-out life and of his reminiscences of Hughie. The poor clerk is less a character on this stage than a member of the audience, who absent-mindedly nods his head or grunts in agreement, often without even listening to what Ernie is saying.

The play was never performed during O'Neill's lifetime; its Broadway premiere (starring, of course, Jason Robards Jr.) was not staged until 1964--a decade after O'Neill's death. It's not as bad as some of the one-acts he wrote as an apprentice, nor will it ever be considered one of O'Neill's great works: "Hughie" places the same demand on the audience that its protagonist does on the clerk ("Sorry if I'm keeping you up, Sport"). In spite of the play's brevity, the source of its genius is also its basic shortcoming: O'Neill paints a totally convincing, familiar, and sympathetic portrait of a man who is, at heart, an unmemorable bore.

You can use this for both solo performance or performance with orchestra.

Chopin's Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise brilliante - Opus 22 is one of Chopin's six works for piano and orchestra. However, it is rarely performed with orchestra because the accompanying orchestra does so little it is hardly worth the time and expense to do so. You can get recordings of the work with orchestra because the economics of recording make it work. For example, you might be recording one or both of Chopin's concerti and doing this as well. But to put this on a program and bring in a soloist to perform it with an orchestra or to put together and orchestra for a solo recital rarely works.

Yet, concert pianists love the work and want to perform it. What to do?

The first choice is to perform just the Andante spianato (a flowing or smooth andante is what the title means), which is a lovely work and deserves as much performing as it can get.

However, because the orchestral part in the polonaise only plays when the pianist isn't playing, it is possible to play Chopin's piano reduction of the orchestral part (it was never issued in a full score) as a soloist along with the solo piano and make it a solo work for piano. This is what this wonderful edition provides. The orchestral tutti is clearly marked and set in small notes, so if you are going to perform it with orchestra you know what NOT to play. But if you are going to perform it as a solo work for piano, you have all the music to do so.

And like all Henle editions, this is marvelously done. Printed beautifully, durable, and using reliable scholarship.

I would not recommend this book, it is outdated, it is still refering to Windows 95. Dont waste your time or money on this book. I would have wanted this book to be more up to date, This will not help the Help Desk professional of today. I only gave it one star because other wise I would not be able to write this review, I would have preferred to give it no stars.

A unique spicy read

The Colors of Autumn is the third book in Silke Ming's Five Widows Series. With each new installment I noticed that each of the widows has different sexual tastes which adds its own flavor to the stories. They are always unique in their own way and are BIG with the sex scenes. I really liked this story a lot more then the last one. But there was a couple of small things that did bother me about this book.

Shortly after Autumn goes to Charleston to meet back with Bobby Jo for some more hot sex, Autumn learns that Bobby Jo likes to be in control in the bedroom. When Bobby Jo decides to do some personal grooming on Autumn, one of the terms that was used disturbed me. I did not like to think of a woman's mound to be a "grassy knoll" that needed to be "sheared like a spring lamb". This definitely made me think poor Autumn had a forest down there and I didn't find that sexy at all. However, the sex between Bobby Jo and Autumn was quite hot and inventive and was really something to read about. The only other thing that threw me slightly was I felt for Autumn's age, she was too naive and too young minded in my opinion. Other then these two things, I really did enjoy the story. I liked how Autumn was trying to find herself and thought her experimenting with Bobby Jo and Richard and her finally able to figure out what she really wanted was really well played.

With everything being so interesting and the story being really unique and sexy over all, I gave The Colors of Autumn a FOUR OUT OF FOUR STARS! Even though there was a couple of things that popped out as being a little odd, the story all together was really good and I found this to be one of my favorites in The Five Widows series.
