It’s exciting, adventurous, and totally spellbinding!
By savingsinseconds
While the futuristic tale appears to be loosely based on ideas similar to that of Hunger Games or Maze Runner, the Meritropolis world is completely new to dystopian fiction. Since I’m a parent and a teacher, I’m always concerned about “mature” content in books. Thankfully, both Meritropolis and Meritorium are very clean, and free from profanity. There are a few suggestions of sex, but nothing is graphically described. Deep questions about the impact of chemicals in our environment, or the need to defend those less fortunate, can stir up excellent class discussions. I also appreciated the way that Ohman tastefully worked in biblical references. The big questions about accepting cultural norms, a person’s worth, and social standing really come through in this series. It’s a great way to introduce these elements to your dinner table discussion; read these books with your teen and start a great conversation. I received this book from the author; opinions shared are mine.

Great Unexpected Continuation!
By Protozoan
I was given a free copy from the author for an honest review.

Some of my favorites from the book:

"He was coming to understand privilege. It's all relative. You resent those with more, you don't notice those with less, and yet you don't even realize that in the midst of your resentment, you are being resented in turn. An instant realization hit: we are all haves, and we are all have-nots-it just depends on who's doing the evaluating"

"I think when we reduce life it its physical components, mechanize it, act as if life were nothing more than the sum total of what we can see- a wing, a leg, an eye, or whatever- and we bring it under human control and design it, then the result is that life is engineered in a man's image and not God's"

"Some might ask what was worse: to revel in evil and injustice, or to have the power to stop it but to turn away?"

"In order for violence to work, your opponent must have a conscience"

This was a great story! It was not what I was expecting at all. After reading the last book, I knew where the journey was heading but getting to that point and the turmoil the characters had to go through was very startling. If you read the first book and loved the animals, you will love this book; there are A LOT more animals to learn about. Mr. Ohman's new animal combinations are all very different and unique. The adventure starts off right where the first book left off. So if you haven't picked up the first book, you will not connect with the characters as well; it will be hard to understand their drive to get to Meritorium, the animal creations or the drive for revenge or justice from each character. There are hints of this information but not enough for a reader to really understand each character thoroughly and their evolution in the story.

I enjoyed getting to know more of the other characters. This book was completely different from the first book. The characters pondered and questioned their values and beliefs. They each individually started contemplated their own actions and motives. It was interesting to see this emerge from them individually. They are all slightly more philosophical and slowly realizing they are maturing.

Mr. Ohman's writing was awesome. I noticed that he had more poetic influences in this story in a few parts, which I also wasn't expecting. Such as, this line "the so-called lower-class citizens who cheered, jeered and leered enthusiastically in hopes of seeing more violence and gore", there were quite a few of those and I thought it was a fun part of the story telling. I think the writing has improved and isn't much like the first book. There are a lot more descriptions and a much broader vocabulary that was incorporated, which I really appreciated.

During most of the book, the main character, Charley, was hard to deal with at times. I lost my patience with him a few times but there is a reason why he is mentally destructive. The ending was completely unpredictable as was the rest of the book. There were so many events that occurred that turned the journey in a different direction, it was so gripping. I would read this book only while doing cardio and restrict myself to only reading it during this time because I would completely forget about the time and run longer. The book was that exciting and intriguing, I fell into the world where the system ruled and the fight continued.

I would like to thank Mr. Ohman once again for sharing the second book with me. It was my pleasure and I cannot wait for the third book!

Fell Far Short of the First
By Morris
“Meritorium” is the second book in the Meritropolis series. The debut book, “Meritropolis”, introduced a unique and well-developed world, along with an interesting cast of characters. Unfortunately, “Meritorium” did not live up to the original.

The characters and plot are still interesting, which is what frustrated me the most about the problems in the book. There was quite a bit of “over-explaining”, which did nothing but slow down the flow of the plot and cause me to grow impatient with it. Additionally, there were some interesting religious themes, but instead of letting the story carry them, they were also explained in too great of detail. It reduced the impact and made it read like a sermon, whereas subtlety would have given much more for the reader to ponder.

“Meritorium” had a lot of potential, but I can’t recommend it because of the reasons above. I’m still looking forward to the next in the series, as I have high hopes it will return to the writing style the made “Meritropolis” so good.
